Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma today took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term.

 

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Dr Sarma at a ceremony held at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati.

 

Along with Dr Sarma, four MLAs were also sworn in as Cabinet Ministers.

 

They include Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog from the BJP, Atul Bora from Asom Gana Parishad and Charan Boro from Bodoland People’s Front. 

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, several Union Ministers and Chief Ministers from NDA ruled states attended the ceremony.

 

With this, Dr Sarma has become the first non-Congress leader in Assam to serve consecutive terms as Chief Minister.

 

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power for a third consecutive term in the state, securing 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.

 

The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the dominant force with 82 seats, while its allies – the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) – won 10 seats each. 

 

Meanwhile, BJP National President Nitin Nabin today congratulated Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boruah and Ajanta Neog on taking oath as ministers in the newly formed cabinet in Assam.

In a social media post, Mr Nabin said the massive mandate reflects the people’s strong faith in the politics of development. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam is emerging as the growth engine of the Northeast. He added that major initiatives in connectivity, peace and preservation of cultural identity have given the state a new identity of development.

The BJP chief also expressed confidence that under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the NDA government will continue to work towards the vision of a developed Assam and a developed India.
