The Supreme Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation that sought to confer on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose the title of National Son and to notify key dates associated with him as national days.
A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi refused to entertain the petition filed by Pinakpani Mohanty. The court noted that similar pleas had been filed earlier and dismissed.
The petition also asked for January 23, his birth anniversary, and October 21, the 1943 foundation day of the INA, to be declared national days. Further, it requested that his birthplace in Cuttack be designated as a national museum.
During the hearing, the Bench questioned the petitioner about filing a similar plea earlier. Dismissing the PIL, the Bench reiterated its concern over the growing tendency to file petitions seeking declarations on historical and political issues. It observed that such matters fall outside the scope of judicial proceedings.
