UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that regulating Artificial Intelligence is not the role of the United Nations, as the world body plans to convene an annual global dialogue on AI with participation from governments, the private sector and civil society.
In an interview with a news agency, ahead of his visit to New Delhi for the India AI Impact Summit, Guterres outlined three key initiatives under the Global Digital Compact to strengthen global cooperation on AI.
These include the creation of a high-level Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence comprising 40 experts from across the world. Guterres said the panel will provide independent scientific assessments on AI advancements and risks, enabling governments to take informed policy decisions.
The UN General Assembly recently appointed the panel members, including IIT Madras professor Balaraman Ravindran. UN Secretary General Guterres also proposed a voluntary global fund of up to three billion dollars to help developing countries build AI capacity.
During his visit, the UN chief will address the Summit, hold bilateral talks with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and participate in discussions on renewable energy and global digital cooperation.
