Red Alert in Himachal Pradesh as Heavy Rains Lash Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu

The spell of monsoon rains continues in Himachal Pradesh, and the Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the three districts of Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu over the next 24 hours. The department has also issued a warning of excessive rainfall for other parts of the state during this period.

Continuous heavy rains have disrupted normal life in the state and caused significant damage to crops as well. With road connectivity blocked in most parts of the state, farmers and orchardists are unable to transport their produce to the markets on time. In the tribal district of Kinnaur, as well as in most areas of Shimla and Kullu, landslides triggered by incessant heavy rainfall have blocked hundreds of roads, bringing the apple trade to a standstill. Due to the road blockages, only limited quantities of apples have reached the markets over the past three to four days.

Heavy rains have also washed away farmlands and orchards belonging to farmers and horticulturists. Similarly, cash crops, including tomatoes, have been destroyed in the lower regions. Meanwhile, restoration work on roads, communication networks, electricity, and drinking water schemes is being carried out on a war footing in the affected areas.
