Rajya Sabha Discusses Private Member Bill to Amend POCSO Act

The Rajya Sabha today took up a private member bill, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2024 for further consideration and passing. The Bill seeks to further amend the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The motion had been moved by the NCP (SCP) MP Dr Fauzia Khan in the Budget Session this year.
 
 
Participating in the discussion, Dr John Brittas of CPI (M) said, the existing Act requires certain changes in line with the present needs. He said, one lakh 37 thousand cases related to POSCO are pending in the country. Participating in the discussion, Dr Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade of BJP said, children are the future of the country saying that the Modi government has shown utmost sensitivity towards the protection of children from such offences. Sandosh Kumar P of CPI supported the private member bill saying that there is also a need to uphold the rights of children in diverse cases. Other members also participated in the discussion. The discussion remained inconclusive. Before this business, various members including Dr Fauzia Khan of NCP(SCP), Darek O’ Brien of Trinamool Congress, Dr  Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade and Dr John Brittas of CPI(M) also introduced their private member Bills. 
 
 
Later, the House took up Special Mentions in which several MPs raised the issue of public importance. After completing the business, the House was adjourned to meet again on the 8th of next week at 11 AM.
