PMEGP plays key role in promoting entrepreneurship and generating employment, says government

The Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, PMEGP, being implemented through the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, continues to play a key role in promoting entrepreneurship and generating employment across the country.

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, in a statement, said that during the 15th Finance Commission cycle from 2021-22 to 2025-26, the scheme has shown robust performance, strengthening India’s micro-enterprise ecosystem.

The Ministry said that against an approved budgetary outlay of around 13 thousand 554 crore rupees, the scheme achieved full utilisation of funds. It facilitated the establishment of more than four lakh three thousand micro-enterprises, surpassing the target of four lakh two thousand enterprises.

The programme also generated sustainable employment opportunities for around 36 lakh 33 thousand people, contributing significantly to livelihood creation and grassroots economic development.

The Ministry said, PMEGP has continued to promote inclusive growth through targeted support to women and socially disadvantaged communities. Women beneficiaries account for nearly 40 per cent of the total micro-enterprises supported under the scheme, while nearly 54 per cent of beneficiaries belong to SC, ST and OBC categories.

It added that nearly 80 per cent of the enterprises established under PMEGP are located in rural areas, supporting rural industrialisation and balanced regional development.

The Ministry said it remains committed to further strengthening the scheme in the coming cycle with greater focus on innovation, scalability and wider outreach.
