Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) has led to total savings of nearly 40 thousand crore rupees for the citizens during the last eleven years. The scheme launched by Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, has emerged as one of the most impactful social initiatives. In last eleven years, the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras have increased by 210 times and the sales have also surged to more than 270 times. At these Jan Aushadhi Kenras, these medicines are sold at prices 50 to 80 percent lower than their branded equivalents, enabling citizens to avail quality healthcare at minimal cost.
Currently nearly 17 thousand Jan Aushadhi Kendras are operational across the country. Under PMBJP, the government has set a target to increase this number to 20 thousand Kendras by March next year and 25 thousand Kendras by March 2027, ensuring that the benefits of this initiative reach even the remotest parts of the nation. Some of the patients who purchased medicines from Jan Aushadhi Kendra located at AIIMS, New Delhi appreciated the government’s initiative.
PMBJP’s product basket now includes over two thousand medicines and 315 surgical items covering 29 therapeutic categories such as antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs, anti-diabetics, analgesics, and nutritional supplements. From ensuring affordable medicines to empowering entrepreneurs and strengthening rural health infrastructure, PMBJP reflects the Government’s vision of “Sabko Sasti Dawa Swasth Bharat Ki Asha.
To maintain the highest standards, all medicines under PMBJP are procured only from World Health Organization-Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO-GMP) certified suppliers and tested at National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accredited labs. Currently there are five warehouses in the country from where these generic medicines are distributed to the distributors and Jan Aushadhi Kendras after following the procedure of quality check. These warehouses are situated at Gurugram, Chennai, Bengaluru, Guwahati and Surat. Beyond providing affordable medicines, PMBJP has also generated significant self- employment opportunities. The scheme operates on a franchise-based model, allowing entrepreneurs to open Kendras with assured margins and incentives.
