PM Modi Reaffirms India’s Commitment to Wildlife Conservation on World Wildlife Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to wildlife conservation on the occasion of World Wildlife Day. In a social media post, Mr Modi said World Wildlife Day is an occasion to celebrate the incredible faunal diversity that enriches the planet and sustains ecosystems. He said that the day also acknowledges the efforts of all those working towards wildlife protection. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to conservation, sustainable practices, and protection of habitats so that the country’s wildlife continues to thrive.

The Prime Minister also said that India is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife. Highlighting the percentage of the tiger population in India, Mr Modi said that the country hosts over 70 per cent of the world’s tiger population. He said that India has the largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros and the largest number of Asiatic elephants. The Prime Minister also emphasised the numerous efforts the government has made to protect wildlife. This includes establishing the International Big Cat Alliance, which is an exceptional forum for sharing best practices with fellow nations. He also mentioned that the other efforts include the protection of the Great Indian Bustard, Gharial, and Sloth Bear, and translocating cheetahs.

Meanwhile, Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav termed World Wildlife Day as a celebration of the incredible biodiversity of earth. In a social media post he said that India remains mindful of the many dangers threatening its rich ecosystem. Mr Yadav added India is committed to not just conserving what it has, but also recovering key species for ecosystem restoration. The Minister expressed hope that the wildlife thrives, enriching the planet.
