Prime Minister Narendra Modi today criticised opposition parties for not supporting the Women’s Reservation Bill, alleging that they failed to prioritise the welfare of women.
Addressing a rally at Codissia in Coimbatore while campaigning for NDA partners, Mr Modi said the DMK-Congress alliance had focused on promoting family interests rather than empowering women from ordinary backgrounds to enter Parliament and State Assemblies. He said he had personally appealed to them to support the Bill, but they chose to oppose it.
The Prime Minister also accused the DMK of spreading misinformation and said the state government was working for the interests of a single family. Describing the intention of the DMK, he said their Government was for the family, of the family and by the family and compared them to a hard worker like C.P. Radhakrishnan, who rose to become the Vice President of India.
Mr Modi said the upcoming election would be a “game changer” and stressed the need for a double-engine government for faster development of the state. He added that the Centre had provided financial assistance of 14 lakh crore rupees to the state over the past 11 years.
Highlighting welfare measures, the Prime Minister said 25 crore people had been lifted out of poverty and encouraged the use of rooftop solar power to help households save on electricity costs.
Senior leaders, including AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Union Minister L. Murugan and BJP state president K. Annamalai, were present at the rally.
