Offshore wind can become strong pillar of country’s clean, self-reliant energy future, says Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi today said that offshore wind can become a strong pillar of the country’s clean, reliable, and self-reliant energy future. Mr Joshi was speaking at the launch of India-UK Offshore Wind Taskforce in New Delhi.

He said offshore wind has a strategic role in the country’s transition to strengthen the reliability and grid stability, industrial depth, and energy security.

The Minister also highlighted that transmission planning for an initial 10 gigawatts of offshore evacuation capacity has been completed, with five gigawatts each for Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Mr Joshi remarked that offshore wind requires specialised port infrastructure, marine logistics, robust seabed leasing frameworks, clear risk allocation, and bankable commercial structures, making it one of the most complex segments of the global energy transition.

He added that the task force has been constituted to provide strategic leadership and coordination to India’s offshore wind ecosystem. The Minister said the launch of the task force is a flagship result of India-UK cooperation under Vision 2035.

Mr Joshi also stressed that India achieved 50 per cent of its cumulative installed power capacity from non-fossil sources last year. He added that the target has been achieved five years ahead of the Nationally Determined Contribution commitment. The Minister added that the country’s installed non-fossil capacity stands at over 272 gigawatts, with solar at more than 141 gigawatts and wind at 55 gigawatts.
