Meghalaya: Search, rescue operations continue in mine explosion site at Mynsngat, Thangsko area

In Meghalaya, search and rescue operations are continuing following the mine explosion at Mynsngat, Thangsko area, with teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Special Rescue Team (SRT), Police, and District Administration engaged in the operation. Two additional bodies were recovered yesterday, taking the total death toll to 27. The affected mine sites were thoroughly searched, and operations will resume this morning to ensure complete coverage.

The District Administration, East Jaintia Hills District, has intensified enforcement drives against illegal mining, deputing five teams comprising Executive Magistrates, Police and officials from the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR). During the drives, approximately 3197 MT of coal were seized from 9 locations under Umlawang and 351 MT from 4 locations under Umthe. In a similar drive conducted on 6th February 2026, 3,356 MT of coal was seized from 8 locations along the Sakhain-Thangsko road along with tools and equipment.

In addition, makeshift camps used in connection with illegal mining activities were identified and destroyed during the enforcement operations. FIRs have been registered in connection with reported illegal mining activities, and further legal action is underway. A prohibitory order under Section 163 BNSS has been issued by the District Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills District to ensure public safety and facilitate ongoing operations.
