MEA launches second phase of specialised cancer care training Program for BIMSTEC countries in Visakhapatnam

The second phase of the Specialised Training Program in Cancer Care for BIMSTEC Countries was formally launched today at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCHRC) in Visakhapatnam. The program was launched by the External Affairs Ministry Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC & SAARC) C.S.R. Ram.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. C.S.R. Ram said, the program brings together participants from BIMSTEC countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Nepal. He highlighted that the rising burden of cancer and unequal access to quality care in the region make capacity building and skill development essential. The initiative aims to improve cancer care services while fostering regional collaboration and research.

The initiative was announced by the Prime Minister of India at the 6th BIMSTEC Summit and is being implemented by the Tata Memorial Centre with support from the External Affairs Ministry. The inaugural edition held in July-August 2025 trained 21 cancer-care professionals from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Nepal.

The program marks an important step toward strengthening oncology capacity across the BIMSTEC region and reaffirms India’s commitment to regional cooperation and equitable, high-quality cancer care. AP MedTech Zone MD & CEO Dr Jitendra Sharma, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Projects Director A.K. Bagchi, HBCHRC Visakhapatnam Director Dr. Umesh Mahantshetty and several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
