Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today paid floral tributes to the first Speaker of the Lower House Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, in New Delhi, on his birth anniversary. Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Secretary-General of Lok Sabha Utpal Kumar Singh and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
Mavalankar began his legislative journey in 1937 as a member of the Bombay Legislative Assembly from Ahmedabad and served as its Speaker till 1946. He later presided over the Sixth Central Legislative Assembly. With the formation of the First Lok Sabha in 1952, he was unanimously elected as its Speaker in May 1952, a responsibility he fulfilled until his demise on February 27, 1956.
