Proceedings of the Lok Sabha today witnessed continued disruption due to the opposition’s ruckus over the various issues including India-US trade deal. Amid the continuous uproar, the House adopted the motion of thanks to the President’s address to the joint sitting of both the houses of Parliament with voice vote. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed anguish over the behaviour of the protesting MPs saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could not turn up to the House to deliver his reply on the motion of thanks due to the unruly behaviour of the opposition’s MPs in the House yesterday. The Lower House today witnessed three adjournments before being finally adjourned for the day.
As the House assembled at 3 PM after the third adjournment, opposition MPs including Congress, DMK, TMC and others trooped into the well raising slogans against the government. Amid the pandemonium, Speaker Om Birla admonished the behaviour of the protesting MPs saying that their conduct in the House and in his chamber yesterday was not according to the Parliamentary norms and decorum. He termed the opposition’s conduct a black spot in Parliamentary history. He said, yesterday, he had advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come in the House to make his reply to motion of thanks as he has the credible inputs indicating that Congress MPs may create an unprecedented incident by reaching in front of the Prime Minister’s seat in the Lok Sabha. Mr. Birla said he has requested the Prime Minister not to come to the House to avoid any unprecedented situation.
As the ruckus continued, the Speaker adjourned the House for the day to meet again at 11 AM tomorrow. Earlier, when the House met after the second adjournment at 2 PM, the opposition members again started sloganeering over various issues. The Chair urged the protesting members to allow the House to function. As the protest continued, the Chair adjourned the House till 3 PM. When the House met after the first adjournment at 12 Noon, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla took up the Motion of Thanks to the President Address. Mr Birla put to vote the amendments moved by several opposition members on the Motion of Thanks but they were negated by the House. Amidst opposition uproar, the Lok Sabha adopted the motion of thanks. The Lok Sabha speaker said, now the lower House will take up discussion on Union Budget 2026-27 and every member will get an opportunity to speak on it. Amidst continued uproar by the opposition, Mr Birla adjourned the House till 2 PM. President Droupadi Murmu had addressed both the Houses on 28th of last month.
Earlier, when the Lok Sabha assembled for the day at 11 AM, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed concern over the behaviour of the opposition members, who reached near the treasury benches yesterday. He said the behavior was not appropriate and it is against the dignity and decorum of the House. Mr Birla emphasized that maintaining the decorum of the House is the collective responsibility of all the members. He added that if the dignity of the House is not maintained then it will be difficult for any Speaker to conduct the smooth proceedings of the House. Amid the noisy scene, he adjourned the House till 12 Noon.
