The Karnataka government has decided to submit a request to the central government to formulate national guidelines regarding night-time vehicular movement. In the backdrop of the recent horrific bus accident that occurred near Hiriyur in Chitradurga district, the state government has resolved to urge the central government to frame strict national guidelines for vehicle movement during night hours.
Providing information on this in Bengaluru, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy stated that such measures are essential to prevent accidents caused by driver fatigue. He said the state would request the central government to enforce a rule mandating drivers of trucks, lorries, and buses operating on national highways to take a compulsory minimum rest of four hours between midnight 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.
The minister opined that this measure would be particularly helpful in preventing physical exhaustion and the associated risks arising from goods transport vehicles that often operate with only a single driver.
