Union Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry is organising a nation-wide athletics league – ASMITA in New Delhi on the International Women’s Day today.
This initiative will empower female athletes across the country by providing them a competitive platform at the grassroots level.
This league aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to promote and strengthen a strong sports culture in the coming years.
Competitions will be organised for girls in three age categories, including Under 13, 13 to 18 years and 18 years and above. The Athletics events will include 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres races.
IN Punjab, the event will start soon in 12 districts. Above 4000 women are expected to participate in this border state.
The Union Territory of Chandigarh is also organising it. The event is focusing on athletics (100m, 200m, 400m) across the age groups of Under-13, 13-18 years and 18+ categories.
ASMITA – meaning ‘Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action’ – is part of Khelo India’s gender-neutral mission to promote sports among women through leagues and competitions.
Since the year 2021, when the league was launched, more than 2600 such leagues have been conducted across 34 sports disciplines in over 550 districts and 700 cities in the country.
