In Boxing, Young Indian women pugilists Nisha and Muskan showcased their impressive skills by winning gold medals, while five others bagged silver in the U19 Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok yesterday.
Out of the 10 female boxers in the fray, nine will return with medals including two gold, five silver, and two bronze showcasing India’s strong performance against tough competitors from countries like China, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
In the 54kg category, Nisha impressed with a 4:1 win over China’s Sirui Yang, while in the 57kg category Muskan edged out Kazakhstan’s Ayazhan Ermek in a close 3:2 match.
Among the silver medalists were Arti Kumari in 75kg, Kritika Wasan in 80kg, and Parchi Tokas in 80plus category. In the men’s finals, Rahul Kundu won the 75 kg category and added another following a split decision victory over Uzbek’s Muhammadjon Yakupboevek.
The Indian contingent delivered a strong performance at the prestigious event, securing three gold, seven silver, and four bronze medals so far. This brings the country’s total gold medal tally to 14.
The U-19 and U-22 Championships which are being held simultaneously have provided a valuable platform for India’s emerging boxing talents to test their skills against the best from across Asia. India has fielded a powerful 40-member squad 20 boxers in each age group featuring a balanced mix of seasoned champions and promising newcomers.
