Indian artisans shine at Maldives Expo 2025, showcasing ODOP heritage & cultural diplomacy

India’s rich tapestry of traditional crafts and indigenous products is drawing global attention at the Maldives Expo 2025 in Malé. The event, which continues till May 31st, was inaugurated by Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and features a vibrant Indian presence under the Government of India’s One District One Product (ODOP) initiative.

From the handcrafted Channapatna toys of Karnataka to the aromatic Seabuckthorn and Buckwheat tea of Ladakh, the Indian pavilion has become a major attraction. But behind these products are remarkable stories of artisans and entrepreneurs preserving cultural legacies while promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Turning heads at the expo is the vibrant display by Shikha’s Kariigarii, a brand that connects artisans from across India with fabrics and looms to create one-of-a-kind hand-painted garments. At the Expo, her stall is adorned with ODOP-recognised Pattachitra, Madhubani, and Kalamkari sarees and stoles, alongside hand-painted shoes and a lively “Art Zone” offering hat and muffler customisations. Shikha’s vision is to take India’s artisanal traditions global, celebrating handmade artistry in every stitch.

Another compelling story is that of Syed Abdul Kadar, a master artisan from Bangalore, whose wooden handicrafts have captivated visitors. With over 30 years of experience, Abdul Kadar has not only preserved the traditional Channapatna toy-making technique passed down from his father but also mentored eight artisans to carry the craft forward. His dedication makes him a symbol of India’s living heritage and a torchbearer of cultural sustainability.

The journey of Padma Angmo, founder of Nima Goos Goos Ventures in Ladakh is another that has been remarkable. Her mission goes beyond producing premium teas; she works to empower local farmers by ensuring fair prices for their crops and preserving Himalayan agricultural traditions. Each product tells a story of resilience, environmental harmony, and community pride. Padma hopes to inspire young Indians to see agriculture as a dignified and impactful path to entrepreneurship.

This year’s Expo has a special focus on self-help groups (SHGs). Seven distinctive ODOP products crafted by five SHGs from Odisha are being showcased at the Saras Expo, held alongside the main exhibition. These products, developed under the ODOP initiative of the Union Ministry of Rural Development, exemplify grassroots enterprise, innovation, and the power of community.

Together, these artisans and entrepreneurs reflect the essence of India’s cultural diplomacy-where every item tells a story, every product carries a legacy, and every interaction deepens mutual appreciation and respect.
