India to Submit Revised NDC for 2035 by December, Says Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav

Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has said India will publish its revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the 2035 period by December. Addressing the high-level segment of the UN COP30 Climate Summit in Belem, Brazil, Mr. Yadav said climate change is “real and imminent” due to unsustainable growth and development patterns. He is urging developed nations to achieve net-zero targets ahead of their current timelines.

The Environment Minister said that, implementation of climate goals must be adequate, accessible and affordable, and free from restrictive intellectual property barriers. Mr Yadav said India’s newly launched Nuclear Mission and Green Hydrogen Mission will further accelerate its progress towards achieving net zero by 2070. The country will also release its first Biennial Transparency Report soon, he said.

NDCs are national climate plans under the Paris Agreement that set targets to cut emissions and adapt to climate change, guiding global efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Countries are required to submit their third round of NDCs, referred to as “NDCs 3.0”, for the 2031-2035 period this year. Mr. Yadav also said that the COP-30 marks a decade since the Paris Agreement, which is a milestone to assess the world’s collective resolve.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has called for the Conference of the Parties (COP) 30 to be remembered as the COP of Implementation and a COP of delivery on promises. He urged Developed Countries to demonstrate greater climate ambition and honour their commitments. Mr. Yadav also highlighted that India’s emission intensity has declined by over 36 percent since 2005. He added that non-fossil sources now account for more than half of the country’s total electric power installed capacity, a Nationally Determined Contributions – NDC target achieved five years ahead of the nation’s 2030 goal.

The Minister also highlighted that, in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, over 2 billion plants were planted under the community-led initiative in just sixteen months in the country. On the sidelines of the summit, Mr Yadav also addressed the Leadership Group for Industry Transition – LeadIT Industry Leaders’ Roundtable. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister called for stronger global partnerships to accelerate industrial transition. He added that collective efforts would help achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
