India observes 14th Organ Donation Day with Nationwide awareness programs

The 14th Indian Organ Donation Day is being observed across the country on Saturday. To mark the day, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organised an Organ Donation awareness program in New Delhi. On the occasion, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel felicitated the families who donated organs of their family members after being declared brain-dead. She also felicitated to the recipient of donated organs and doctors across the country for successful organ transplantation. She said that the organ donation rate has increased four times to 18 thousand 378 in the last ten years. Ms. Patel lauded the efforts of doctors and families for their decision to donate organs.

 

On the occasion, NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr. V K Paul emphasized the need for awareness about organ donation. He urged multi-speciality hospitals across the nation that they should provide facilities of Organ transplantation.

 

Talking to Akashvani News, NOTTO Director Dr. Anil Kumar highlighted the importance of Organ donation. He urged people to come forward to donate organs and save other’s lives.

 

Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Apurva Chandra and other senior doctors from several states and medical Institutions were also present in the event.

 

Indian Organ Donation Day is observed annually since 2010, to augment awareness about brain stem death and organ donation, dispel myths and misconceptions associated with organ donation and motivate and encourage the citizens of the country to donate organs and tissues after death.
