Heavy snowfall disrupts normal life in Himachal Pradesh

Heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh has severely affected normal life with the disruption of traffic and shortage of drinking water. The situation remains extremely challenging in several districts, including Shimla, Kullu, Chamba, and Kinnaur. Road traffic has come to a standstill, electricity and water supply have been disrupted, and the Meteorological Department has issued alerts for the coming days.

Akashvani’s correspondent reports that heavy snowfall and rain over the past day in Himachal Pradesh have completely affected daily life. In the state capital, Shimla, conditions have not returned to normal even on the second consecutive day. Vehicular movement remains suspended on most roads of the city, and people are being forced to walk on slippery routes.

The national highway connecting Shimla to the lower districts has been closed near Heeranagar, due to which bus services have been completely affected and around 800 routes of the state transport corporation remain suspended. Meanwhile, fresh snowfall in Manali has led to nearly one foot of snow accumulation on the Mall Road, and several tourist vehicles are stranded on the way.

The administration is providing relief to those stranded. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre, three national highways and 636 link roads across the state are blocked for traffic, while 5,032  electricity transformers are out of service. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla has predicted adverse weather conditions for today and tomorrow as well. With another western disturbance expected to become active from January 26, a yellow alert has been issued for heavy rain and snowfall till January 28.
