The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced the observance of Nationwide Fire Safety Week 2026 from the 4th to the 10th of next month.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretaries of States and Union Territories, Secretary of the Ministry, Punya Salila Srivastava, emphasised that the initiative will place special focus on strengthening fire prevention and safety measures in healthcare facilities across the country.
This year’s Fire Safety Week will be observed under the theme “Safe School, Safe Hospital and Fire Safety Aware Society – Together for Fire Prevention.” The campaign aims to promote awareness, improve compliance, and foster a culture of safety among healthcare workers, students, and the community.
The Ministry has issued key resources to ensure effective implementation of the programme. These include a detailed schedule of day-wise activities, an updated Fire Safety Assessment Checklist, and a Fire Safety Pledge to encourage collective responsibility. All materials have been made available online for easy access and dissemination to both public and private healthcare institutions.
Highlighting the importance of preparedness, the Ministry stated that fire incidents pose a serious threat to both life and infrastructure, especially in healthcare settings where patients rely on uninterrupted critical care. With the onset of the summer season, the need for enhanced vigilance and strict adherence to fire safety norms has become even more crucial.
Healthcare facilities have been advised to conduct fire safety assessments using the updated checklist and submit reports through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme portal. Authorities have emphasised that any gaps identified during these assessments must be addressed promptly.
The initiative is being organised in coordination with the Directorate General of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The observance will particularly target district-level health facilities, hospitals associated with medical colleges, and multi-speciality institutions.
