In West Bengal, the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar today said that strict action will be taken against persons who indulge in intimidation to voters in the upcoming Assembly elections. In a press conference in Kolkata, he said the Commission will not tolerate any pre-poll or post-poll violence.
Today, the CEC said the motto of the Special Intensive Revision SIR is to make a pure electoral roll, which would ensure no eligible voters are excluded, and no ineligible persons are to be included in the electoral rolls. Mr. Gyanesh Kumar said the District Election Officers (DEOs) and Superintendents of Police SPs have been categorically instructed to conduct a peaceful and violence-free election in the General Election to the Assembly of West Bengal.
On the other hand, the Commission has informed the media that under the direction of the Supreme Court and the supervision of the Calcutta High Court, the judicial officials are checking the names under adjudication.
On the issue of how many phases the Assembly election in West Bengal will be conducted, the CEC said it would decide on the situation of law and order preparedness. On recent political attacks on the ECI by the Trinamool Congress leaders, Gyanesh Kumar informed the Election Commission of India is a constitutional body and need not indulge in political comments.
The full bench of the Commission came on 8th March in Kolkata and had extensive meetings with the law enforcement agencies, District Election Officers, nodal officers of Police and central forces, IG/ DIG range followed by meetings with Chief Secretary and Director General of Police during Monday and Tuesday.
