Election Commission extends deadlines for Special Intensive Revision in five states and one Union Territory

The Election Commission of India has revised the schedule for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in six states and union territories. Our correspondent reports that these include Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Uttar Pradesh.

As per the revised schedule of SIR, in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, the exercise will now be completed by the 14th of this month. The deadline for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been extended to the 18th of this month, while the deadline for Uttar Pradesh has been extended to the 26th of this month. The publication dates for the draft electoral roll have also been revised. In Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, the draft will be released on the 19th of this month. For Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, it will be published on the 23rd. In Uttar Pradesh, the draft roll is now scheduled for release on the 31st of this month. The schedule for Kerala was revised earlier by the poll body. The enumeration period for Kerala would end by the 18th of this month and the draft roll will be published on 23rd December. The commission also noted that the enumeration period for Goa, Gujarat, Lakshadweep, Rajasthan and West Bengal will end today. Draft electoral rolls for these states and UTs will be published on the 16th of this month. The ECI has also said that the decision for the revision of the schedule has been taken after they received requests from the Chief Electoral Officers of the 6 states and UTs.
