Dengue cases rise across Sri Lanka amid mosquito breeding concerns

Sri Lankan health authorities have reported a rise in dengue cases, with nearly 30,000 infections recorded nationwide so far this year amid concerns over increased mosquito breeding in public spaces.

The island’s National Dengue Control Unit said 29,589 dengue cases and 15 deaths had been reported as of May 18. During the same period in 2025, Sri Lanka had reported around 22,500 dengue cases.

Western Province accounted for the highest number of infections, followed by the Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Cases have been detected in all 25 districts, with Colombo, Gampaha, Ratnapura, Matara, Galle, Kalutara, and Kandy among the worst-affected areas.

Health officials said entomological surveys showed increased dengue transmission in schools, government institutions, workplaces, and religious sites, prompting authorities to intensify mosquito control and public awareness campaigns.
