Death toll in explosion at fireworks factory in China’s Hunan province rises to 37

The death toll in the explosion at a fireworks factory in China’s Hunan province has risen to 37, with one person still missing.

The blast occurred on Monday at a plant operated by the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company in Liuyang city near Changsha, the provincial capital.

According to China’s state-run news agency, 51 people were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment in hospitals. Five of them remain in critical condition, though doctors said their vital signs are stable.

Authorities said large-scale search and rescue operations at the site have now been largely completed. More than 1,500 rescue and medical personnel were deployed after the explosion.

Police have summoned eight people on suspicion of negligence leading to the accident. Officials are continuing investigations into the cause of the blast.
