Colombo High Court hears refiled case against Ajith Nivard Cabraal in bond investment case

In Sri Lanka, a case has been refiled against former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal in the Colombo High Court over his alleged failure to comply with a court order to deposit Rs 100 million within three months. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) said the case was re-filed under Section 67(5) of Sri Lanka’s Anti-Corruption Act in connection with the controversial Greek bond investment case.

Earlier, the Bribery Commission had sought to withdraw proceedings on the condition that the deposit was made. However, fresh legal action was initiated after the condition was reportedly not fulfilled. The case relates to allegations that Sri Lanka incurred losses exceeding Rs. 1.84 billion through investments in Greek sovereign bonds in 2012, which was roughly 13-14 million USD, at a time when Greece was facing a deep financial crisis.
