In Maharashtra, on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, a day traditionally marked by a high number of weddings, the District Administration of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has taken strong measures to prevent child marriages.
District Collector Dilip Swami has directed district, taluka, and village-level officials to stay vigilant and act promptly against any such incidents. A District Task Force for the Elimination of Child Marriage has been activated to coordinate efforts across departments.
From April 1, 202,4, to date, the task force has intervened in 88 attempted child marriages. Four FIRs have been registered under relevant laws.
Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, the legal age for marriage is 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. Violations are punishable with up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of one lakh rupees or both.
