Census 2027 to begin in Punjab from April 30 in two phases

In Punjab, the Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases starting from April 30th. Comprehensive administrative arrangements have been put in place for this humongous task, which serves as a comprehensive source of socio-economic and demographic information and plays a crucial role in development, planning, formulation of welfare schemes, and strengthening public services.
 
Briefing media in a joint press conference at Chandigarh today, Director, Directorate of Census Operations and Dr. Navjot Khosa and Administrative Secretary, Department of Local Government, Punjab, Manjit Singh Brar said that this is for the first time that the Census 2027 will be conducted in digital mode using mobile applications along with introduction of Self-Enumeration through the online portal. Dr. Khosa said that the first phase will start from 30th April 2026 to 14th May 2026, which includes Self-Enumeration, followed by house-to-house enumeration from 15th May 2026 to 13th June 2026.
 
Phase-II of Population Enumeration is scheduled from next year, 9th February 2027 to 28th February, 2027. Phase-I will focus on housing conditions, amenities, and assets and will form the basis for the Population Enumeration phase. She said to identify if the person coming over to collect the data from you is genuine or not, one can scan a QR code given on his identity card.
 
Census 2027 will be the 16th Census in India and the 8th after Independence. The last Census was conducted in 2011, while the 2021 Census was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A national toll-free helpline number (1855) for Census 2027 will be operational in Punjab from 30.04.2026 to assist the public for any queries.
