The occasion of World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22 to highlight the importance of fresh water and promote ways to conserve water for future generations. Water is a basic necessity we all can’t live without, therefore understanding the mediums of water conservation is important. The theme for World Water Day 2024 is ‘Water for Peace’. According to the United Nations, when we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect, fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges.
World Water Day brings people, organizations, and governments together to confront urgent water challenges and strive toward guaranteeing that everyone has access to clean water and sanitation through awareness-raising events, educational programs, and community-driven campaigns.
The theme for this year is ‘Water for prosperity and peace’. It emphasises the critical role water plays in fostering cooperation and stability around the world. This year the World Water Day calls for international collaboration to ensure equitable access to water and promote water as a tool for peacebuilding.
In a video message on social media post on the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government is committed to work towards sustainable water management.
The UN General Assembly designated March 22nd as World Water Day in 1993, following the recommendations of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). Since then, it has been observed globally to highlight water-related issues and promote action to address them.

Using Cauvery water and borewell water is prohibited in the public interest,” the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) said, adding that no other restrictions have been imposed on the use of water during Holi.
The board said it took to decision as several borewells across the city have dried up due to the insufficient rain and falling groundwater levels. “It’s crucial for everyone to cooperate with BWSSB effectively,” it said.

Water can create peace or spark conflict. When water is scarce or polluted, or when people struggle for access, tensions can rise. By cooperating on water, we can balance everyone’s water needs and help stabilize the world.
Prosperity and peace rely on water. As nations manage climate change, mass migration and political unrest, they must put water cooperation at the heart of their plans. Water can lead us out of crisis. We can foster harmony between communities and countries by uniting around the fair and sustainable use of water – from United Nations conventions at the international level, to actions at the local level.

The Alipore Central Correctional Home now known as Alipore museum is an important national monument located in the heart of Kolkata.
“Constructed in 1906, and spread over 15.2 acres, this colonial era institution can be easily identified with its characteristic brick red walls. Within the premises one can see the Alipore Jail Press Building, the central watchtower, Gallows area which has been inscribed with the names of the great freedom fighters who were hanged there, over a dozen buildings which served as prison cells and wards, and the Alipore Jail Hospital which serves as the main exhibition building. It houses exhibits of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rishi Aurobindo, Dinesh Gupta, Women Martyrs of Bengal, the history of 18th & 19th Century India starting from The Battle of Plassey in Bengal in 1757 to the culmination of the freedom movement in 1947, INA theme café and a souvenir room. A light and sound show depicting the lives and struggle of the freedom fighters is been regularly held. Last year the police museum was shifted here where firearms used by notable revolutionaries and their police reports are on display. Notable freedom fighters who were imprisoned here include Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Dinesh Gupta, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. It served as a correctional home till 2019 when the inmates were transferred to Baruipur, on the outskirts of Kolkata. From being a silent witness to the brutalities inflicted on the freedom fighters of the country, the Alipore Central Correctional Home is now transformed as a memorial and museum to honour the sacrifice of those who fought for India’s independence.-Susmita Mandal, Akashvani Kolkata.”

Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam has picked up the scavenger Greater Adjutant Stork as ‘mascot’ to encourage electorates to turn out in larger numbers and exercise their franchise in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.
“In Assam, Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has picked up the Greater Adjutant Stork, locally known as Hargila as the Mascot under the SVEEP initiative of the Election Commission of India and named as Tutola and Kadami. The SVEEP is the flagship program of the Election Commission of India for voter education, spreading voter awareness and promoting voter literacy. The Kamrup Metro district administration, by selecting the Hargila birds as the SVEEP mascot, acknowledged the great effort of Hargila Army, a group of more than 10 thousand dedicated women, for making significant strides in conservation of the scavenger bird from the brink of extinction. These women, considered the true heroes of conservation, have become the biggest advocates for the Greater Adjutant Stork, working tirelessly to increase its population. The Hargila, often misunderstood as a bad omen or disease carrier, faced severe threats from people and wanted to eradicate it. These misconceptions led to almost extinction of this scavenger bird. In Kerala, the Lok Sabha election campaigns are in full swing as the State gears up for polling on April 26th. A report:
“All the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala will go to polls in the second phase of election on April 26th. The notification will be out on March 28th. The state Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Kaul had informed that all the arrangements are being done for the smooth conduct of election and the strict compliance of the model code of conduct in the State. The three major political fronts contesting in upcoming Loksabha election in Kerala are the ruling Left democratic front- LDF, the Congress led UDF and the BJP lead NDA. In 2019 General elections, out of 20 constituencies, 19 was won by UDF and one seat was won by LDF. LDF and UDF have announced candidates in all 20 constituencies. NDA has announced so far in 16 constituencies . Many national leaders are in the fray like Union Ministers Rajiv Chandrasekaran from Thiruvananthapuram, V. Muraleedharan from Attingal and the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is contesting from Wayanad. As the campaign of all the three fronts are getting heated up along with the weather in the State, a strong triangular competition is getting visible in most of the constituencies. Preparations for the Lok Sabha elections in Meghalaya have gained momentum with the issuanse of notification for the first phase. There are only two Lok Sabha seats in Meghalaya, one is Shillong and the other is Tura. Both the seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Voting in the state will be held in the first phase on 19 April.
