And, now time for our segment DATELINE INDIA in which we take a look at the developments taking place at national or global level.

Today we will talk about GLOBAL E-WASTE
Digital livelihood is a new term that I have coined today Divya. You, I and everybody are now so much dependent on our mobile phones, tablets, laptops and other electronic devices and it is the new way of living in the evolving world. But you will be surpsised to know that the world’s generation of electronic waste is rising five times faster than the documented e-waste recycling. This revelation was made by the UN’s fourth Global E-waste Monitor (GEM).

Divya, the other eyeopening news is, worldwide, the annual generation of e-waste is rising by 2.6 million tonnes annually, on track to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030, a further 33% increase from the 2022 figure. E-waste, any discarded product with a plug or battery, is a health and environmental hazard, containing toxic additives or hazardous substances such as mercury, which can damage the human brain and the coordination system.

The report underlines that if countries could bring the e-waste collection and recycling rates to 60% by 2030, the benefits – including through minimizing human health risks – would exceed costs by more than US $38 billion. It also notes that the world remains stunningly dependent on a few countries for rare earth elements, despite their unique properties crucial for future technologies, including renewable energy generation and e-mobility.

Divya I would like to mention that as per the WHO
E-waste is the fastest growing solid waste stream in the world. It is increasing 3 times faster than the world’s population . However, people living in low- and middle-income (LMICs), particularly children, face the most significant risks from e-waste due to lack of appropriate regulations, recycling infrastructure and training. Despite international regulations targeting the control of the transport of e-waste from one country to another, the transboundary movement of e-waste to LMICs continues, frequently illegally. E-waste is considered hazardous waste as it contains toxic materials or can produce toxic chemicals when treated inappropriately.

E-waste recycling activities may have several adverse impacts on human health. Children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable.

ILO and WHO estimate that millions of women and child labourers working in the informal recycling sector around the world may be at risk of e-waste exposure.

Working as a waste picker is hazardous labour and is considered one of the worst forms of child labour by the ILO. In 2020, the ILO estimated that as many as 16.5 million children globally were working in the industrial sector, of which waste processing is a subsector .It is unknown how many child labourers participate in informal e-waste recycling.

प्रतिकूल नवजात परिणाम, जिसमें मृत जन्म और समय से पहले जन्म की बढ़ी हुई दरें शामिल हैं;

So before we conclude I would like to mention the steps suggested by WHO for Prevention and management of E-waste.
⦁ National and international actions are essential to protect communities from dangerous e-waste recycling activities. Actions that can be taken include:
⦁ Adopting and enforcing high-level international agreements;
⦁ Developing and implementing national e-waste management legislation that protects public health;
⦁ Incorporating health protection measures into national legislation;
⦁ Monitoring e-waste sites and surrounding communities;
⦁ Implementing and monitoring interventions that improve informal e-waste recycling activities, protect public health and ensure vital sources of community revenue;
⦁ Educating health workers across all levels on e-waste-related child health issues;

The state of Goa may be geographically small, but it is rich in diverse culture, and this is largely reflected in its festivals. Due to the influence of the Portuguese rule, many traditional festivals in Goa have taken a different turn and reflect syncretic celebrations as it brings the two main religious communities of Goa, i.e. Hindus and Catholics, together. That comes to mind is the five days Intruz festival which was celebrated from 2nd March to 5th March in Dongri in Goa which begins in eleventh month of Hindu calendar i.e. Magh.

In Goa, the festival of carnival marks merriment, and earlier it was celebrated as the “Intruz.” The five days festival of Intruz in Dongri showcases the unique blend of the celebration mingled with dancing, playing folk musical instruments and recitation of folk songs by observing various rituals. The word, ‘Intruz’, which also refers to Carnival, is celebrated by the Catholic community in Goa. But, in the small village, called Dongrim near Old Goa, in North Goa, it is celebrated by the Hindu community, as well.

Intruz festival is held for five days, and villagers of five different mandaps, or groups, of Dongrim village come together. It usually starts with a procession of village members of five mandaps . This procession is called Fatya Suvari, where the procession by members of all five mandaps, with a Chatri i.e sacred umbrella is held. It culminates at the main Intruz mahal, or hall.The highlight of the festival is the music, which is locally known as Suvari vadan, with musical performances on traditional instruments such as dhol, taaso, ghumot, etc.

The festival of Inruz culminates by smearing of gulal on each other. It starts early in the morning with this tradition, and this represents the end of the festival. Festivals like Intruz enriches communal harmony and underlines the spirit of unity in diversity of India. Tushar Jadhav for Akashvani Panaji Goa.

The Alipore Central Correctional Home now known as Alipore museum is an important national monument located in the heart of Kolkata. We have details from our kolkata correspondent:

Constructed in 1906, and spread over 15.2 acres, this colonial era institution can be easily identified with its characteristic brick red walls. Within the premises one can see the Alipore Jail Press Building, the central watchtower, Gallows area which has been inscribed with the names of the great freedom fighters who were hanged there, over a dozen buildings which served as prison cells and wards, and the Alipore Jail Hospital which serves as the main exhibition building. It houses exhibits of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rishi Aurobindo, Dinesh Gupta, Women Martyrs of Bengal, the history of 18th & 19th Century India starting from The Battle of Plassey in Bengal in 1757 to the culmination of the freedom movement in 1947, INA theme café and a souvenir room. A light and sound show depicting the lives and struggle of the freedom fighters is been regularly held. Last year the police museum was shifted here where firearms used by notable revolutionaries and their police reports are on display. Notable freedom fighters who were imprisoned here include Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Dinesh Gupta, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. It served as a correctional home till 2019 when the inmates were transferred to Baruipur, on the outskirts of Kolkata. From being a silent witness to the brutalities inflicted on the freedom fighters of the country, the Alipore Central Correctional Home is now transformed as a memorial and museum to honour the sacrifice of those who fought for India’s independence.
