The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is an international agreement aimed at addressing the issue of desertification and land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas. The UNCCD was adopted in Paris on June 17, 1994, and entered into force on December 26, 1996. Coinciding with the Convention’s 30th anniversary, Desertification and Drought Day on 17 June 2024 will be a pivotal moment to raise global awareness and mobilize all parts of society in support of sustainable land stewardship.
Listeners would be surprised to know that every second, an equivalent of four football fields of healthy land becomes degraded, adding up to a total of 100 million hectares each year.

But what is Desertification?
It is the process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of various factors, including climatic variations and human activities. It involves the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas, leading to the loss of productivity and biological richness.
मरुस्थलीकरण और सूखा दिवस 2024 के उद्देश्य हैं:
- मरुस्थलीकरण और सूखे के बारे में जन जागरूकता बढ़ाना।

The causes of Desertification are :
- Natural Causes: These include prolonged droughts, climate change, and other natural factors that reduce the availability of water and nutrients in the soil.
- Human Activities: Overgrazing, deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practices and improper land management can contribute significantly to desertification. Urbanization and industrial activities also play a role by altering the natural landscape and depleting water resources.
मरुस्थलीकरण, भूमि क्षरण और सूखा आज हमारे सामने सबसे जरूरी पर्यावरणीय मुद्दों में से एक हैं, वैश्विक भूमि क्षेत्र का 40 प्रतिशत पहले ही नष्ट हो चुका है। स्वस्थ भूमि हमारे लगभग 95 प्रतिशत भोजन का उत्पादन करने के अलावा कई लाभ प्रदान करती है, यह कपड़े और आश्रय के लिए सामग्री भी प्रदान करती है, नौकरियां और आजीविका पैदा करती है, और हमें बढ़ते सूखे, बाढ़ और जंगल की आग से बचाती है।

The 18th Mumbai International Film Festival for documentary, short fiction and animation films is underway in Mumbai. In the morning, a panel discussion, titled ‘Unlocking the force: Channelling Documentary films to drive social change’ was organised. The session was attended by Indian Director – Dr Talakadu Shrinivasaiah Nagabharana and General Manager at NFDC D Ramkrishnah. The Six-day festival will culminate on 21st June.
On Friday, the Mumbai International Film Festival featured the big screen international premiere of the documentary “My Mercury”. Directed by Joelle Chesselet (जोएल चेस्लेट), the film offers a deeply personal and challenging journey into the life of her brother, Yves Chesselet (यवेस चेस्लेट), a lone conservationist on Mercury Island off the coast of Namibia in South Africa. “To live on an island, you need a certain kind of personality, says Joelle Chesselet (जोएल चेस्लेट), highlighting her brother’s wish to escape the world’s noise and rush. The 104-minute documentary explores the life of Yves Chesselet (यवेस चेस्लेट) and his conservation efforts on Mercury Island, where seabirds and seals are his only companions. His mission to reclaim the island for endangered species becomes a story of sacrifice, triumph, and deep connections with nature. The film examines the decline of endangered seabirds and other wildlife threatened by seals.

उत्तराखण्ड के उच्च शिक्षण संस्थानों में छात्र, शिक्षा के साथ कमाई भी कर सकेंगे। राज्य सरकार जरूरतमंद छात्रों को रोजगार उपलब्ध कराने के लिए सीएम लीप अर्न वाइल यू अर्न योजना को शुरू करने जा रही है। आइये इस योजना के बारे में और अधिक जानते हैं उत्तराखण्ड से हमारी राज्य संवाददाता साक्षी सिंह से-

In Sikkim three month training Course on Conservation of Sikkim’s Cultural Heritage Concludes recently.
“The first 3-month training course on the Conservation of Cultural Heritage of Sikkim concluded at the Sikkim State Archives & Museum Complex, Gangtok. Conducted from March 11 to June 15, 2024, the course was organized by the Sikkim State Archives, Culture Department, in collaboration with the Himalayan Society for Heritage and Art Conservation (HIMSHACO) and supported by Tata Trusts. Participants included representatives from the Sikkim State Archives, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, and monks from four monasteries. The training, focused on wood and metal objects, was led by experts from the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur, and the Institute of Wood Science & Technology, Bangalore, among others. Coordination was handled by Mr. L.N. Sharma and Mr. Chetan Pandey. An exhibition displaying artifacts and methodologies used during the course was held from June 14. Visits from cultural and ecclesiastical department officials highlighted the event. Following the course, a one-month in-situ internship program will take place at respective centers. लगातार भारी वर्षा व बाढ़ की स्थिति के कारण पश्चिम बंगाल के दार्जिलिंग पर्वतीय क्षेत्र में जनजीवन काफी प्रभावित है।
“राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग संख्या 10 जो सिक्किम की एक मात्र जीवन रेखा है, विगत तीन दिनों से बन्द है। राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग बन्द होने के कारण हजारों पर्यटक सिक्किम में फंस गए हैं। पश्चिम बंगाल के फंसे पर्यटकों को सुरक्षित निकालने के लिए पश्चिम बंगाल सरकारने वैकल्पिक मार्ग सिंगला चेक पोस्ट पर पर्यटक सहायता केन्द्र स्थापित किया है। इस संबंध में दार्जिलिंग के जिल्ला शासक ने कल एक आदेश जारी किया है। दार्जिलिंग व कालिम्पोंग जिल्ले को जोड़नेवाली सड़क पर टिस्टा में पानी भर गया है, जिससे यातायात ठप्प हो गया है। तथा राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग 10 को कालिम्पोंग के लिखुभीर से सिक्किम के मल्ली के निकट रवी खोला तक याता यात बन्द करना पड़ा है। सिल्लीगुड़ी से सिक्किम की राजधानी गान्तोक जानेका मार्ग परिवर्तित किया गया है। सिल्लीगुड़ी से गान्तोक जाने हेतु जहाँ अधिकतम् 4 घण्टे का समय लगता था वहीं अब भाया लाभा कालिम्पोंग रम्फू या रिनक पाक्योंग वैकल्पिक मार्ग से यात्रा समय करीब 8 घण्टा से अधिक लग रहा है। किराया जहाँ 400 से 500 रूपिया लगता था वहीं अब यात्रियों को 1000 से 1500 रूपए देने पड़ रहे हैं। कुछ दिनों पहले आए समुन्दी तूफान रेमल के बाद से ही सिक्किम दार्जिलिंग में भारी वर्षा हो रही है। तथा टिस्टा नदी का जल राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग पर आजारहा है, जिससे राजमार्ग बार बार छतिग्रस्त हो जारहा है। परिक्रमा के लिए अशोक चौरसिया, आकाशवाणी कर्सियांग।”

इससे पहले आज सुबह सेंट लुसिया में श्रीलंका ने नीदरलैंड्स को 83 रन से हराकर प्रतियोगिता में पहली जीत दर्ज की। दो सौ दो रन के लक्ष्य के जवाब में नीदरलैंड्स की टीम 16 ओवर और चार गेंद में केवल 118 रन ही बना सकी।
सेंट विंसेंट में ही एक अन्य मैच में बांग्लादेश ने नेपाल को 21 रन से हरा दिया। पहले बल्लेबाजी करते हुए बांग्लादेश की टीम ने 19 ओवर और तीन गेंद में केवल 106 रन बनाए। जवाब में नेपाल की टीम 19 ओवर और दो गेंद में केवल 85 रन पर सिमट गई। इस जीत के साथ बांग्लादेश सुपर-आठ में पहुंच गया है।

मोतीलाल (पुण्यतिथि)
दिलीप कुमार की फिल्म पैगाम हो, देवदास या राजकपूर की जागते रहो। इन सब फिल्मों में अपनी एक्टिंग का लोहा मनवाने वाले बीते जमाने के बेहतरीन अभिनेता मोतीलाल की आज 59वीं पुण्यतिथि है। मोतीलाल ने करीब तीन दशक तक हिन्दी फिल्मों में काम किया। 1955 में आई फिल्म देवदास में इन्होंने चुन्नी बाबू का किरदार निभाकर लोकप्रियता हासिल की।
इन्हें हिंदी फिल्मों का नेचुरल एक्टर भी कहा गया। मोतीलाल नेवी में भर्ती होने के लिए मुम्बई पहुंचे थे लेकिन किस्मत ने इन्हें फिल्मों में पहुंचा दिया। 1940 में आई फिल्म अछूत में मोतीलाल ने अस्पृश्य व्यक्ति का किरदार निभाया। सामाजिक संदेश देती इस फिल्म में उनके जोरदार अभिनय की प्रशंसा महात्मा गांधी और सरदार वल्लभाई पटेल ने भी की।

Today is the birthday of Tennis Legend, Leander Paes. Born on 17th June, 1973, Leander took a keen interest at the age of 12, when he enrolled in the Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy in Madras (Chennai) in 1985, where he was coached by Dave O’Meara. Paes earned international fame when he won the 1990 Wimbledon Junior title and reached No. 1 in the junior world rankings at age 17.
Paes received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award, India’s highest sporting honor, in 1996–97; the Arjuna Award in 1990; the Padma Shri award in 2001; and India’s third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan prize in January 2014, for his outstanding contributions to tennis. He won a bronze medal for India in men’s singles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games making him the 1st Asian in Olympic history to win a tennis medal and the only Indian till date. He competed in consecutive Olympics from 1992 to 2016, making him the first Indian and the only tennis player to compete in seven Olympic Games. He is also the most decorated male tennis player in Asian Games history with 5 Golds and 3 Bronzes winning medals in every category (singles, doubles, mixed doubles and team event) and the highest Indian gold medal winning athlete across all sports in Asian Games history.

निशिकांत कामत जन्म- 17 जून, 1970, मुम्बई, महाराष्ट्र
हिंदी सिनेमा के मशहूर निर्देशक और अभिनेता इन्होंने ‘दृश्यम’, ‘मुंबई मेरी जान’ और ‘मदारी’ जैसी शानदार फ़िल्मों का निर्देशन किया। उनकी पहली फ़िल्म ‘डोमिब्वली फ़ास्ट’ ने मराठी सिनेमा में खूब प्रसिद्धि दिलाई।
उन्होंने अपने कॅरियर की शुरुआत मराठी फ़िल्म ‘डोमिब्वली फ़ास्ट’ से की थी। उन्हें इस फ़िल्म के राष्ट्रिय सम्मान से भी नवाजा गया। निशिकांत कामत ने अपने फ़िल्मी कॅरियर की शुरुआत हिंदी सिनेमा में बतौर अभिनेता फ़िल्म ‘हवा आने दो’ से की थी। इसके बाद वह निर्देशन का रुख किया। फ़िल्म ‘दृश्यम’ में भी उन्होंने अभिनय किया।
