On World Radio Day, we speak through the heartbeat of the airwaves themselves, celebrating radio, the invisible thread that carries our voices across distances and unites us as one.
विश्व रेडियो दिवस की घोषणा संयुक्त राष्ट्र शैक्षिक, वैज्ञानिक और सांस्कृतिक संगठन (UNESCO) द्वारा 2011 में अपने 36वें आम सम्मेलन में की गई थी और बाद में इसे संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा द्वारा 2012 में अपने 67वें सत्र के दौरान अपनाया गया था। यह प्रतिवर्ष 13 फरवरी को संयुक्त राष्ट्र रेडियो की स्थापना की स्मृति में मनाया जाता है, जिसकी स्थापना 1946 में हुई थी और जिसने द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के तुरंत बाद प्रसारण शुरू किया था और वैश्विक संचार और सूचना साझाकरण के प्रति प्रारंभिक प्रतिबद्धता का प्रतीक था।
The theme this year is “Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI is a tool, not a voice.” Radio slips quietly into daily life, asking for little but offering companionship, information and a sense of belonging. Even in metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai, FM radio continues to be a part of the daily urban life, with taxi and auto drivers tuning in for traffic updates, cricket commentary, music and interactive shows, underscoring radio’s enduring relevance even in a highly digitised city.

To mark World Radio Day 2026, Akashvani Raipur, Chhattisgarh, in collaboration with UNESCO, organised a World Radio Day Conclave today. The special event in Raipur was held in collaboration with UNESCO. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai attended the event as the Chief Guest. Director General of Akashvani Rajiv Jain, UNESCO’s Regional Advisor for Communication and Information Hajjaj Male, several public representatives, Padma Shri awardees, and experts from various fields took part in the programme.

“रेडियो और कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता: एआई एक उपकरण है, आवाज नहीं” विषय प्रसारण तंत्र में कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता की बढ़ती भूमिका को रेखांकित करता है। यह दर्शाता है कि एआई किस प्रकार सामग्री निर्माण, संग्रहण, अनुवाद, श्रोता सहभागिता और सुलभता को बेहतर बना सकता है, जिससे रेडियो अधिक कुशल और समावेशी बन सके। साथ ही, यह विषय इस बात पर भी बल देता है कि प्रौद्योगिकी को एक सहायक प्रणाली के रूप में ही रहना चाहिए, न कि रेडियो की पहचान बन चुके मानवीय आवाज, संपादकीय निर्णय और विश्वसनीयता का विकल्प।
Akashvani has been serving the nation since its inception with the motto “Bahujan Hitaya, Bahujan Sukhaya”. Established in 1936 and brought under public ownership after Independence, Akashvani has grown into one of the largest broadcasting organisations in the world, in terms of the number of languages broadcast and the diversity of audiences served. Private FM radio complements public broadcasting by delivering local entertainment and information across urban and regional India. In his message on the occasion of World Radio Day, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L Murugan said radio plays a crucial role in disseminating information to the common people.
