Our segment Dateline India, in which we take a look at the developments taking place at the national or global level. Today, we will talk about Koraput COFFEE.
Today, we travel to the picturesque hills of Koraput in southern Odisha – where misty mornings and rich red soil nurture something truly special… a brew that has found its way into the Prime Minister’s words and the hearts of millions – Koraput Coffee! During his Mann Ki Baat programme this Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Koraput Coffee, calling it “The Pride of Odisha.”He admired not just its exquisite flavour, but also how it’s transforming lives – especially for women farmers in this beautiful region.
Let’s take you to the heart of Koraput, where coffee cultivation began decades ago – but has now taken on new life, thanks to the passion of local farmers and cooperatives. Amidst lush coffee plantations in Koraput, where rows of coffee shrubs stretch across the rolling hills. Farmers pick ripe red cherries – each one filled with a burst of flavours. Earlier farmers used to depend on small crops that didn’t earn much. But after learning coffee cultivation, their lives changed. Forming self-help groups, and selling coffee beans collectively, Koraput Coffee is more than just a drink – it’s empowerment in every sip.
The story doesn’t end there!
Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, shared his delight too. He said – Pride brewed with joy when the Prime Minister mentioned Koraput Coffee. It’s a testament to Odisha’s diverse climate and harvest, and also a window into the support our women cultivators receive.”
So what makes this coffee so special?
Experts say it’s all about Koraput’s unique agro-climatic conditions – the altitude, the rainfall, the fertile soil, and the traditional organic methods used by the farmers. Today, coffee is cultivated over 2,759 hectares of land in the district – producing rich Arabica beans known for their smooth texture, chocolatey notes, and balanced acidity. even the aroma is heavenly!
You can almost smell it through the radio, can’t you?
Already, Koraput Coffee has been showcased at national and global expos, and is now available in select cafés and online stores. But at its core, it remains rooted in its people – the tribal farmers, the women’s self-help groups, and the quiet hills that nurture every bean. Koraput Coffee – brewed in the hills, inspired by the heart, and celebrated across the nation.
