The tradition of celebrating Teacher’s Day on 5th September began in 1962, when students and well-wishers of Dr. Radhakrishnan requested to celebrate his birthday. Instead of a personal celebration, he suggested the day be dedicated to teachers across the nation.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, often referred to as S. Radhakrishnan, was an eminent Indian scholar, philosopher, and statesman who made significant contributions to the fields of education and diplomacy.

Remembering some best of the teachers today, we first take the name of Savitribai Phule was an educationist who devoted herself to educating women and low-caste people during the British rule in India. She holds the title of being the first female teacher to work in the first women’s school in India.

The Onam festival started 11 days ago with Atham and today’s Thiru Onam is the most auspicious day during this harvest festival. The Thiru Onam celebrations started with Ona Pookkalam, which is the floral carpet on the floors to welcome the legendary King Maha Bali. According to Onam legends, the noble King Maha Bali visits his Kingdom of Kerala during the Onam days.
Wearing of new dresses called Ona kodi is another custom on Thiru Onam day. Ona Sadya, the indispensable part of the Thiru Onam celebrations is being served in Kerala houses to increase the charm of Thiru Onam. This Ona Sadya is the feast served on plantain leaves with rice, variety of curries and sweet called payasam. Thiru Ona Sadya was held in major temples including hill shrine of Sabari Mala, Guruvayur and Trikkakkara, which is believed to be the capital of Maha Bali.
After the Ona Sadya, it is the time for traditional sports and cultural events. Thousands of cultural programmes are being organized in various parts of Kerala on Thiru Onam day. Various traditional dance forms including women’s dance called Thiruvathira Kali, colourful mask dance Kummaattikkali etc will be performed during the Onam days in Kerala. After the Thiru Onam day, next two days will be celebrated as Third Onam and Fourth Onam.

Online shopping has changed the way we buy our daily needs. From food to groceries, everything is just a click away. But while customers enjoy the convenience, small shopkeepers and traders often struggle to keep up with giant multinational platforms that charge heavy commissions and eat into their business.
To offer a homegrown alternative, the Puducherry Traders’ Federation has launched a new delivery app called “Puduvai Bazaar – Our Town, Our Shop. Managed entirely by young entrepreneurs, Puduvai Bazaar allows shopkeepers and hoteliers to sell directly to customers at fair prices. Lets hear more from our correspondent:
What makes the Puduvai Bazaar app different is its focus on local traders and customers. Unlike foreign platforms and big corporate apps that take up to 40 percent commission, this app charges only 10 percent, leaving more money in the hands of local businesses.
Talking to Akashvani, Puducherry Traders’ Federation Secretary Murugapandian said that the goal is to give customers the same convenience of online shopping while ensuring that neighbourhood stores and small eateries thrive. Consumers can choose their favourite shops, order groceries or even food from local restaurants, and have it delivered at their doorstep, all at the original price fixed by the seller.
The app has already found success in places like Namakkal and Cuddalore in Tamilnadu where traders have enthusiastically embraced the idea. For Puducherry too, the hope is that Puduvai Bazaar will become more than just a delivery app. It is a step towards strengthening the local economy, encouraging self-reliance, and reminding us that every rupee spent in our neighbourhood shops helps a family next door. अनूठे व्यंग्य रचनाकार, लेखक शरद जोशी की भी आज पुण्य तिथी है। अपने समय की सामाजिक, राजनीतिक और सांस्कृतिक विसंगतियों को उन्होंने अपनी पैनी कलम से सधे हुए अंदाज में व्यक्त किया। वह भारत के पहले व्यंग्यकार रहे, जिन्होंने मुंबई में ‘चकल्लस’ के मंच पर पहली बार 1968 में गद्य पढ़ा और किसी कवि से अधिक लोकप्रिय हुए। शरद जोशी का जन्म 21 मई 1931 को उज्जैन में हुआ था। क्षितिज, छोटी सी बात, साँच को आँच नहीं, गोधूलि और उत्सव फ़िल्में लिखने वाले शरद जोशी ने 25 साल तक कविता के मंच से गद्य पाठ किया। शरद जोशी के व्यंग्य में हास्य, कड़वाहट, मनोविनोद और चुटीलापन दिखाई देता है, जो उन्हें जनप्रिय रचनाकार बनाता है। उन्होंने टेलीविज़न के लिए ‘ये जो है ज़िंदगी’, ‘विक्रम बेताल’, ‘सिंहासन बत्तीसी’ सहित अनेकों धारावाहिक लिखे, जो खूब पसंद किए गए।

संगीतकार सलिल चौधरी
भारतीय फ़िल्म जगत को मधुर सुरों से सजाने वाले महान् संगीतकार सलिल चौधरी की आज पुण्यतिथि है। 19 नवम्बर, 1923 को पश्चिम बंगाल में जन्मे सलिल चौधरी के संगीतबद्ध गीत आज भी लोकप्रिय है। उन्होंने हिन्दी के साथ-साथ बंगाली और मलयालम फ़िल्मों के लिए भी संगीत दिया। सलिल चौधरी को एक प्रयोगवादी एवं प्रतिभाशाली संगीतकार के तौर पर जाना जाता है। इसकी झलक ‘मधुमती’, ‘दो बीघा जमीन’, ‘आनंद’ और ‘मेरे अपने’ जैसी फ़िल्मों के मधुर संगीत में दिखाई भी देती है। 1958 में विमल राय की फ़िल्म ‘मधुमति’ के लिए सलिल चौधरी सर्वश्रेष्ठ संगीतकार के ‘फ़िल्मफेयर पुरस्कार’ से सम्मानित किए गए। 1988 में उन्हें ‘संगीत नाट्य अकादमी पुरस्कार’ से भी सम्मानित किया गया। 1960 में आई फ़िल्म ‘काबुली वाला’ में ‘मन्ना डे’ का गाया गीत “ऐ मेरे प्यारे वतन..” आज भी श्रोताओं की आंखों को नम कर देता है।

नीरजा भनोट
विमान परिचारिका नीरजा भनोट को भी नमन। आज उनकी पुण्य तिथी है। 7 सितंबर 1963 को जन्मी नीरजा 5 सितंबर 1986 को मुम्बई से न्यूयॉर्क जा रहे अपहृत विमान में यात्रियों की सहायता एवं सुरक्षा करते हुए आतंकवादियों की गोलियों का शिकार हो गईं थीं। उनकी बहादुरी के लिये भारत सरकार ने मरणोपरांत उन्हें अशोक चक्र से सम्मानित किया। पाकिस्तान और अमरीकी सरकार ने भी उन्हें उनकी बहादुरी के लिए सम्मानित किया। अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर नीरजा का नाम हीरोइन ऑफ हाईजैक के तौर पर मशहूर है। वर्ष 2004 में उनके सम्मान में भारत सरकार ने एक डाक टिकट भी जारी किया और अमेरिका ने वर्ष 2005 में उन्हें जस्टिस फॉर क्राइम अवार्ड दिया। विमान अपहरण की घटना और नीरजा भनोट पर 2016 में एक फ़िल्म भी बनी, जिसमें नीरजा का किरदार सोनम कपूर ने अदा किया।

SHARAD JOSHI (21stMay1931 to 5th Sept 1991) Remembering one of the great satirist & dialogue & scriptwriter of the Indian Cinema Sharad Joshi on his Death Anniversary Sharad Joshi was a Hindi poet, writer, satirist and a dialogue and scriptwriter in Hindi films and television. Many people enjoy the humor in his satirical essays, plays, television writings and dialogues for films.
After his graduation, he wrote satirical pieces for newspapers and radio in Indore. In late 1950s, he was writing for newspapers and radio in Indore.
Later Joshi moved to Bhopal from Indore. When Naya Daur (1957) was being shot in Bhopal, Joshi had gone to the sets where for the first ever time he saw what a film script looked like.
Starting from 70s, he wrote for films, mainly as a dialogue writer. Apart from writing the well known comedy series Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Sharad Joshi also wrote Vikram Aur Vetal, Sinhasan Battisi, Pyaale Mai Toofan (which had 12 minute episodes), Guldasta, Dane Anaar Ke and the Hindi translation of Malgudi days for TV.
Sharad Joshi also wrote satirical plays. His plays Ek Tha Gadha Urf Aladad Khan and Andhon Ka Haathi are popular for satire and timeless humour.
Madhya Pradesh Govt. has instituted an award in his memory titled, “Sharad Joshi Samman”, given each year to individuals for outstanding achievement in the field of writing. It includes cash award of ₹. 51,000 and citation.
Dialogue writer for Chhoti si Baat in 1975 and Dil hai ki Manta Nahin in 1991.
NEERJA
The young Indian flight purser who on this day in 1986, saved a large number of passengers onboard Pan Am Flight 73, which had been hijacked by four terrorists from the Abu Nidal Organization after it made a stopover at Jinnah International airport in Karachi, Pakistan. Around 17 hours into the standoff, after she opened an emergency exit door and began helping passengers escape from the plane, Neerja was shot and killed by the hijackers.
Posthumously, Bhanot became the first female recipient and, until 2003, the youngest recipient of the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award of India. She also received several accolades from the United States.

Salil Chowdhury (19 November 1925 – 5 September 1995) On his death anniversary we also pay a tribute to the legendary Indian composer Salil Chowdhury honouring his pioneering spirit, musical versatility, and enduring legacy in film music across multiple languages.
Acknowledged as the “composer’s composer,” his work is distinguished by its unique blend of Indian folk and classical music with Western influences.
His music is celebrated for its timelessness and freshness. He influenced a generation of musicians, including Rahul Dev Burman and A. R. Rahman. fused with his deep roots in Bengali folk and Hindustani classical music to create a distinct and innovative sound.

Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas (5 September 1933 – 15 March 2024) We also remember with gratitude an Indian naval officer who served as the 13th Chief of Naval Staff, from 1990 to 1993…..Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas on his birth anniversary today.
Ramdas joined the Indian Navy in 1953, and served as the flag lieutenant to Admiral Ram Dass Katari, the first Indian Chief of the Naval Staff. During the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971, he was involved in a naval blockade of East Pakistan, hindering attempts to evacuate 93,000 troops and leading to East Pakistan’s surrender, for which he was awarded the Vir Chakra.
Salute to these bravemen who show exemplary bravery, sacrifice, and commitment in safeguarding the nation.
