And now, time for our segment Dateline India, in which we take a look at the developments taking place at the national or global level. In a famous quote from “A Room of One’s Own”, Virginia Woolf astutely declares, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” The statement succinctly captures the profound impact that good food can have not only on our physical well-being but also on the various aspects of our lives. Food isn’t just fuel—it’s information for your body. What you eat affects every system in your body, from cells to organs to your brain. Choosing nutritious foods consistently is one of the most powerful ways to improve and protect your health. Similarly, eating food that is not safe i.e. food that is contaminated and adulterated, can be harmful. Today is World Food Safety Day.
Today is World Food Safety Day. The observance of the day intends to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and respond to public health threats associated with unsafe food.Access to sufficient amounts of safe food is key to sustaining life and promoting good health. Foodborne illnesses are usually infectious or toxic in nature and often invisible to the plain eye, caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances entering the body through contaminated food or water.
World Health Organisation WHO data reveals:
⦁ 200: Diseases caused by unsafe food, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers
⦁ 16 hundred thousand people get sick due to unsafe food every day, on average
South-East Asia Region bears the second-highest health burden due to the consumption of contaminated food, with an estimated 150 million illnesses and One lakh seventy five deaths yearly. The tropical climate in many countries in the region promotes the spread of pests and advances the formation of naturally occurring toxins, a situation worsened by the impacts of climate change.
Food safety is a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers.
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and respond to public health threats associated with unsafe food. During the World Food Safety Day, the WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to contribute to food security, consumer health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.
Science is at the heart of food safety. It helps us understand what makes food unsafe and guides us on how to prevent foodborne diseases. The theme of World Food Safety Day on 7 June 2025 draws attention to the use of scientific knowledge as key to reducing illness, cutting costs and saving lives.
Food safety has a critical role in assuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain – from production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, all the way to preparation and consumption.
⦁ Clean: Wash hands, utensils, and surfaces before and after handling food.
⦁ Separate: Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood separate from ready-to-eat foods to avoid cross-contamination.
⦁ Cook: Cook food to safe internal temperatures to kill harmful microbes.
⦁ Chill: Refrigerate perishable foods promptly to slow bacterial growth.
⦁ Check: Always check expiration dates and avoid using food that looks, smells, or tastes off.

India has undergone a decade of remarkable transformation, driven by the principles of Seva, Sushasan, and Garib Kalyan. Akashvani News brings you a special feature on the Government’s efforts over the last 11 years across key sectors. Today, we focus on the empowerment of Indian Farmers.
“In the last eleven years, India’s agriculture has witnessed a quiet revolution, guided by the vision of “Beej Se Bazaar Tak”, that is, “from seed to market”. The government’s budgetary allocation in agriculture has grown nearly five-fold, from 28 thousand crore rupees in 2013-14 to 1.37 lakh crore rupees in 2024-25. Direct support to farmers has been unprecedented. Over 3.7 lakh crore rupees has reached 11 crore farmers directly under PM-KISAN. Financial security for farmers has also improved. The Kisan Credit Card scheme has extended 10 lakh crore rupees in credit, while Fasal Bima Yojana has helped nearly 20 crore farmers with crop insurance claims worth 1.75 lakh crore rupees. MSPs for key crops like wheat, paddy, pulses, and oilseeds have seen sharp hikes. Schemes like PM-KUSUM for solar pumps, and Natural Farming Missions have enhanced resilience and promoted sustainability. Efforts like PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana and the Soil Health Card Scheme have strengthened irrigation and soil productivity, empowering farmers with modern tools and scientific inputs. The government has also focused on allied sectors. Milk production has grown by over 63 percent, placing India firmly as the world’s top dairy producer, benefiting over 8 crore farmers employed in this sector. While in fisheries, India’s output nearly doubled in ten years, boosting rural livelihoods and coastal prosperity. Today, the Indian farmer stands not just as a cultivator, but as a key driver of national growth. With Vishnu’s report, Shagun for Parikrama, Delhi.”

India is blessed with a rich cultural heritage. We have many sites that are known for their natural beauty, rich history and cultural values. One such hidden gem is Ushakothi is located in the Sambalpur district in western. Although not very famous, it is an excellent destination for tourists and history enthusiasts who want to discover something new.
The Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Badarama Sanctuary, was established in 1962. It covers around 285 square kilometres. The sanctuary is home to a diverse array of animals, including tigers, leopards, elephants, and various bird species. Two rivers, the Penganga and the Wardha (also known as Vashishtha), flow through it, helping keep the forest alive and green. The area is also rich in history. There are over 600 rock shelters with old carvings and paintings in the Ushakothi-1 area and 67 more in Ushakothi-2. Experts believe these artefacts date back to prehistoric times and reveal how people lived long ago. One of the main attractions is the Ushakothi Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. Locals believe that the Pandavas from the Mahabharata lived in this forest during their 12-year exile. Ushakothi has excellent potential to grow into a popular tourist destination. The government and some NGOs are collaborating to develop the area while preserving the forest. Recently, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan visited the place with local officials. He promised that the central government would help in its growth by preserving its natural beauty. for Parikrama, Bismita Padhan from Akashvani Sambalpur.

Sometimes the best can come out of the waste. In Ariyankuppam, Puducherry, what was once discarded as plastic waste has now taken the shape of vibrant dolls, peacocks, penguins, and flower pots—thanks to the skilled hands of local women. As part of World Environment Day celebrations, more than 50 women from self-help groups took part in a unique two-day workshop that turned awareness into action, and waste into wealth.Organised jointly by the Department of Environment, the Pollution Control Board, and the Ariyankuppam Block Development Office, the initiative aimed to promote creative reuse and environmental responsibility at the grassroots level.
Held in Ariyankuppam, the workshop was more than just a training session-it was a hands-on experience where women learned to breathe new life into plastic waste. From used water bottles and polythene covers to discarded juice containers, the women transformed everyday plastic into striking artistic items-each piece crafted with care and creativity. Ariyankuppam MLA Bhaskar alias Dakshinamurthy inaugurated the event, commending the women for their enthusiasm and urging the community to gradually eliminate the use of plastic from daily life. Pollution Control Board officer Ramesh observed that the participants took great interest in the training, and many of the items made during the sessions will be presented as eco-friendly gifts to dignitaries including the Chief Minister and Lt.Governor. The women, many of whom were trying their hands at such crafts for the first time, found not only joy but also potential in the work-recognising that, what was once seen as waste could now be turned into a source of both pride and possible income. With their hands and hearts set on sustainability, these women of Ariyankuppam have shown how a community can creatively tackle plastic pollution. Their efforts are a reminder that real change begins at the local level-with awareness, action, and a bit of imagination. For Parikrama, this is Bibin S Nath, Akashvani News, Puducherry

We owe to Forster the categorisation of characters into “round” and “flat”. In his1927 book, “Aspects of the Novel”, Forster coined these terms. Flat characters are simple, one-dimensional, and often remain unchanged throughout the story, while round characters are multi-faceted, complex, and can evolve.

Akarshita!, everyone is talking about the developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence these days. We owe a lot of these ideas to British mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher and theoretical biologist, Alan Turing. He is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science. He died on this day at the age of 41 in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England, of cyanide poisoning as an act of suicide.
Alan Turing was famous for his work developing the first modern computers, decoding the encryption of German Enigma machines during the second world war. It was also the subject of the 2014 movie “The Imitation Game”.
Turing addressed the problem of artificial intelligence, and proposed an experiment that became known as the Turing test, an attempt to define a standard for a machine to be called “intelligent”. The idea was that a computer could be said to “think” if a human interrogator could not tell it apart, through conversation, from a human being. We use ChatGPT everyday. It has not only become an integral part of our life but has also reignited conversation about the likelihood that the components of the Turing test had been met.
