World Heritage Day is the shared wealth of humankind. Protecting and preserving these valuable assets demand the collective efforts of the international community. Therefore, each year on 18 April, every nation celebrates the ‘World Heritage Day’ to raise public awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it. Our heritage is not just built of stones, scripts or ruins. It lives in every whisper of a temple wall, every carving on ancient forts and every folk song passed down through generations. It tells stories of who we were, what we stood for and how we endured. World Heritage Day is a heartfelt reminder that these timeless treasures are not only to be admired, but protected. This year’s theme: “Heritage under Threat from Disasters and Conflicts: Preparedness and Learning from 60 years of ICOMOS Actions” reminds us that preserving our past is key to protecting our future. The theme marks six decades of the International Council on Monuments and Sites’ (ICOMOS) efforts in heritage conservation. It’s a global prompt to take stock not just of what we’ve built, but of what we’re at risk of losing.

विश्व विरासत दिवस आज मनाया जा रहा है और ‘संयुक्त राष्ट्र’ की संस्था यूनेस्को ने हमारे पूर्वजों की दी हुई विरासत को अनमोल मानते हुए तथा लोगों में इन्हें सुरक्षित और सम्भाल कर रखने के उद्देश्य से ही इस दिवस को प्रत्येक वर्ष ’18 अप्रैल’ को मनाने का निर्णय लिया था। किसी भी राष्ट्र का इतिहास, उसके वर्तमान और भविष्य की नींव होता है। जिस देश का इतिहास जितना गौरवमयी होगा, वैश्विक स्तर पर उसका स्थान उतना ही ऊँचा माना जाएगा। वैसे तो बीता हुआ कल कभी वापस नहीं आता, लेकिन उस काल में बनीं इमारतें और लिखे गए साहित्य उन्हें हमेशा सजीव बनाए रखते हैं। यूनेस्को, जिसका पूरा नाम संयुक्त राष्ट्र शैक्षिक, वैज्ञानिक और सांस्कृतिक संगठन है, दुनिया भर में महत्वपूर्ण सांस्कृतिक और प्राकृतिक विरासतों की रक्षा और संरक्षण के लिए काम करता है। इसमें मदद करने के लिए, यूनेस्को के सदस्य देशों ने 1972 में विश्व विरासत सम्मेलन को अपनाया। 

विश्व विरासत के स्थल किसी भी राष्ट्र की सभ्यता और उसकी प्राचीन संस्कृति के महत्त्वपूर्ण परिचायक माने जाते हैं। यह समझौता बताता है कि देशों को उन विशेष स्थलों को खोजने और उनकी देखभाल करने के लिए क्या करना चाहिए जिन्हें विश्व विरासत सूची में जोड़ा जा सकता है। नवंबर 1977 में भारत इस सम्मेलन का हिस्सा बना। आज, विश्व विरासत सूची में 1,223 स्थल शामिल हैं जिन्हें पूरी मानवता के लिए मूल्यवान माना जाता है। इनमें 952 सांस्कृतिक स्थल, 231 प्राकृतिक स्थल और 40 स्थल शामिल हैं जिनका सांस्कृतिक और प्राकृतिक दोनों तरह से महत्व है। अक्टूबर 2024 तक, 196 देश विश्व विरासत सम्मेलन में शामिल हो चुके हैं। पिछले कुछ वर्षों में, भारत ने विश्व विरासत सूची में अपनी उपस्थिति का लगातार विस्तार किया है। जुलाई 2024 में, सांस्कृतिक संपत्ति के रूप में असम से “मोइदम्स: अहोम राजवंश की टीला-दफ़नाने की प्रणाली” के शिलालेख के साथ एक गौरवपूर्ण जोड़ किया गया था। इसके साथ ही, भारत की अब विश्व धरोहर सूची में 43 स्थल और यूनेस्को की संभावित सूची में 62 स्थल शामिल हो गए हैं। देश की यात्रा 1983 में आगरा किले की सूची के साथ शुरू हुई, उसके बाद ताजमहल, अजंता गुफाएँ और एलोरा गुफाएँ शामिल हुईं। इन स्थलों को न केवल इतिहास के प्रतीक के रूप में संरक्षित किया जाता है, बल्कि आने वाली पीढ़ियों के लिए सीखने की जगह के रूप में भी संरक्षित किया जाता है।

The heritage of a civilisation cannot be merely etched only in stone or be contained in scriptures. It lives through the timeless principles that have shaped the spiritual and cultural identity of the people. On World Heritage Day, as the world reflects on the importance of preserving cultural legacy, India’s evolving approach to heritage offers a compelling narrative. Here Museums also play a major role. No longer confined to dusty artifacts and silent galleries, Indian museums today are becoming dynamic spaces where the past meets the present – not as a relic, but as a living, breathing reality.

Hence, museums must evolve beyond preservation. They must breathe life into heritage – creating immersive experiences where ancient concepts like karma, dharma, and ahimsa are not viewed as distant philosophies but as lived experiences. Visitors aren’t passive observers.They become participants, engaging with timeless wisdom that feels deeply relevant. Across India’s vast cultural landscape – spanning Jain, Buddhist, Vedic, and Sikh traditions – a shared value system endures. Modern museums, reveal this interconnectedness, helping visitors not just see history but feel a sense of belonging and pride. They are no longer just places where artefacts are stored-they’ve become spaces where history comes alive, where myths, memories, and traditions are woven into powerful narratives that resonate with today’s generation.

यह उल्लेखनीय है कि श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता और भरत मुनि के नाट्यशास्त्र को हाल ही में यूनेस्को के मेमोरी ऑफ़ द वर्ल्ड रजिस्टर में शामिल किया जाना भारत के शाश्वत ज्ञान और समृद्ध संस्कृति की वैश्विक मान्यता है। गीता और नाट्यशास्त्र दोनों ने सदियों से सभ्यता और चेतना का पोषण किया है और उनकी अंतर्दृष्टि दुनिया को प्रेरित करती रही है। इस ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि के साथ, भारत के अब यूनेस्को मेमोरी ऑफ़ द वर्ल्ड रजिस्टर में 14 स्थान शामिल हो गए हैं, जो एक वैश्विक पहल है जो उत्कृष्ट मूल्य के साथ दस्तावेजी विरासत को संरक्षित करती है। यह महत्वपूर्ण ऐतिहासिक ग्रंथों, पांडुलिपियों और दस्तावेजों को मान्यता देता है जिन्होंने पीढ़ियों से समाज को प्रभावित किया है। श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता और भरत मुनि के नाट्यशास्त्र को ऋग्वेद, शांतिनाथ चैत्र, गिलगित पांडुलिपि और अन्य के साथ सूची में शामिल किया गया है।

India has taken several meaningful steps to protect, restore, and promote its vast cultural and natural heritage. These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s timeless traditions and historical treasures. And these steps are not limited to protect the heritage sites of India but the world also.

As Prime Minister Modi observed  that India considers the preservation of global heritage as its responsibility. India is cooperating for heritage conservation in the countries of the Global South along with its own heritage.To preserve the heritage sites  like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Cham Temples in Vietnam, and Stupa in Bagan, Myanmar India has announced contribution of 1 million dollars to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to be used for capacity building, technical assistance and conservation of world heritage sites.

विश्व विरासत दिवस हमें याद दिलाता है कि हमारी विरासत की रक्षा करना एक साझा जिम्मेदारी है। प्राचीन स्मारकों से लेकर कालातीत साहित्य तक, भारत मजबूत राष्ट्रीय प्रयासों और वैश्विक सहयोग के माध्यम से अपनी सांस्कृतिक और प्राकृतिक विरासत को संरक्षित करना जारी रखता है। ये प्रयास सुनिश्चित करते हैं कि हमारी समृद्ध विरासत आने वाली पीढ़ियों को प्रेरित, शिक्षित और एकजुट करे।

As we celebrate World Heritage Day, it’s clear that India’s approach to heritage is not about preserving the past in glass cases. It’s about creating living gateways – spaces where ancient wisdom and contemporary spirit meet, inspiring everybody to carry forward the timeless stories that define us all.

Ernest Taylor Pyle passed away on this day in 1945. He was an American journalist and war correspondent  best known for his stories about ordinary American soldiers during World War II. Pyle is also notable for his columns as a roving human-interest reporter from 1935 through 1941 for the Scripps-Howard newspaper syndicate, which earned him wide acclaim for his simple accounts of ordinary people across North America. When the United States entered World War II, he lent the same distinctive, folksy style of his human-interest stories to his wartime reports from the European theatre (1942–44) and re (1945). Pyle won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for his newspaper accounts of dogface infantry soldiers from a first-person perspective. He was killed by enemy fire on  Iejima  (then known as Ie Shima) during the Battle of Okinawa.
