And, now time for our segment DATELINE INDIA in which we take a look at the developments taking place at national or global level.
Today we will talk about **World AIDS Day**
World AIDS Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness about **Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), promoting rights-based approaches to HIV treatment, and fighting stigma and discrimination against those living with HIV.
World Aids Day was first observed in 1988 when the World Health Organisation (WHO) recognised the day.Today, we take a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come in the fight against HIV, celebrate the progress made, and, most importantly, look ahead to the work that remains to be done to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is **”Take the Rights Path”**. This theme emphasizes that human rights and community leadership are central to ending AIDS for good.
At the core of this year’s theme, **“Take the Rights Path”**, is a call to reaffirm the importance of **human rights** in achieving an AIDS-free world. It’s about ensuring that everyone – no matter their background, gender, or economic status – has access to care and support without fear of discrimination.
In **India**, the **National AIDS Control Organization (NACO)** has been playing a pivotal role in the national response to HIV and AIDS. Since 1992, NACO has been at the forefront of addressing the challenges of HIV, aiming to reduce the number of new infections and increase access to life-saving treatment for those affected. NACO’s efforts are not only about providing treatment but also working to break down the **stigma** and **discrimination** that people living with HIV often face. The goal is clear: End AIDS as a public health threat by the year 2030.
We know that ending AIDS is an ambitious goal, but it is **achievable** if significant work is done for it. The progress we’ve made – with increased access to **treatment** and **prevention services** – gives us hope. But it’s crucial that we address the challenges that remain, including tackling **stigma** and ensuring that **human rights** are upheld for all people, regardless of their circumstances. Now let us take a look at some of India’s Efforts to Prevent it:
According to HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017 the central and state governments shall take measures to prevent the spread of HIV or AIDS.
India has made Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) affordable and accessible to over 90 per cent of people living with HIV in the world.
Project Sunrise was launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2016, to tackle the HIV.
Offering Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis medications to individuals at high risk of contracting HIV can significantly reduce the chances of infection.
Whether through education, **advocacy**, or simply **showing support** for those living with HIV, every action counts. We encourage you to stay informed, get involved, and support efforts that promote health, equality, and dignity for all.
