Nagaland is making grand preparations for the silver jubilee edition of the Hornbill Festival scheduled to be held from first to tenth of December. Many international and domestic tourists are expected to arrive in the Northeastern state to experience the rich and vibrant culture of Nagaland’s 18 major tribes.

The Hornbill Festival – also called the “Festival of Festivals”- was conceptualized to showcase Naga culture, traditional and contemporary in the spirit of unity in diversity. The annual Hornbill Festival is a spectacular event showcasing the rich ancient culture and civilization of the people of Nagaland. It powerfully demonstrates the cultural diversity and civilizational unity of the people.  The festival shows how each tribe is proudly unique in their cultural richness and yet there is an overwhelming sense of unity among all.  This spectacular demonstration of unity in diversity in what India is all about.

The Hornbill Festival is held at the heritage village of Kisama, about 12 km from Kohima. The nomenclature of KISAMA is derived from two villages namely, Kigwema (KI) and Phesama (SA) and MA which means Village, on whose land the Naga Heritage Village is established and commissioned by the State Government of Nagaland. The Heritage complex consists of a cluster of seventeen indigenously designed houses (also called Morung meaning Youth Dormitory), each representative of a different tribe. The goal of creating the heritage village is the protection and preservation of the ethnic cultural heritage through a common management approach and comprehensive data base for the perpetuation of tourism promotion. Since its inception in the year 2000, it has brought about radical changes in the tourism scenario of the state. A visitor gets the opportunity to catch a ring side view of all the Naga tribes, their culture and distinctiveness at one place.

Being the milestone silver jubilee edition, the festival has gained international support, with countries like Japan, Peru, and Wales partnering with Nagaland. On his X handle, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has informed that Japan will participate in cultural and musical performances, as well as conduct workshops on handicrafts. Peruvian artists and cultural performers will also take part in various events. He has expressed hope that that this collaboration will foster stronger bilateral relations.

Union Minister for Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat inaugurated a painting exhibition named  ‘Shunyata’  at the National Museum in New Delhi today.  The exhibition has collections of paintings which focus on the ideas of insubstance and emptiness. We have more details from our correspondent ;

“Shunyata is derived from a Buddhist philosophy which means form is emptiness, emptiness is form. The word Shunyata is translated as insubstance or emptiness. Each canvas in this exhibition displays approximations of figures familiar and unfamiliar, gods and goddesses, mortals and immortals become objectively manifest; as one walks away, forms dissolve and insubstantiality remains. As one looks closely at each canvas, approximations of figures familiar and unfamiliar, gods and goddesses, mortals and immortals become objectively manifest; as one walks away, forms dissolve and insubstantiality remains. Talking exclusively to Akashvani News, artist Abhay K highlighted that he has depicted the philosophy through a series of sixty paintings. He added that the paintings convey the nature of reality which is emptiness.
