The Tamilnadu Food Processing and Agri Export Promotion Corporation has filed an application seeking Geographical Indication for three food products from the State They are Panangarkandu from Ramanathapuram, Seeval from Kovilpatti and pattarai Karuvadu from Ramanathapuram. The NABARD Madurai Incubation Forum was the facilitator for filing the registry. CEO of NABARD K.Ganeshamoorthy said that the State has a lot of regional food products which needs recognition and said that the forum had been actively implementing various initiatives to promote products that had received GI tags.
“Tamilnadu is a key area for the cultivation of palmyra trees. The dry arid climate and sandy soil provide a condusive atmosphere for palmyra trees. Known locally as the tree of life, the palmyra plays an integral role in the District’s rural economy. Panangarkandu is the crystal palm sugar and has been produced in this region for more than 300 years. Pattarai Karuvadu is a traditional dry fish preparation method that involves burying fish in mud after smearing them with turmeric powder in the coastal regions of Rameswaram. The process of making them is called paadam meaning preserving. It is typically made from king fish,ribbon fish, leather skin fish and mackerel. Kovil patti seeval is a traditional deep fried snack known for its crispy texture and unique flavour. It is primarily made from rice flour seasoned with cumin, ajwain which gives a distinct aroma. In Ladakh, the Himank Project of the Border Roads Organisation is currently implementing multiple infrastructural development initiatives. The project also ensures year-round access to military bases and outposts in the Siachen Glacier, along the Line of Actual Control, and in areas near Pangong Lake.
“Project HIMANK, is an initiative of the Border Roads Organisation under Ministry of Defence. Established in August 1985, it aims to develop road infrastructure in Ladakh and parts of Jammu and Kashmir as part of the India–China Border Roads project. Recently, 11 projects in Ladakh were dedicated to the people by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra. Several more projects are expected to be completed in the coming months. Some of these projects are to be carried out by HIMANK. The project maintains airfields and major passes situated at altitudes ranging from 15,000 to 19,300 feet on the highest motorable roads. Chief Engineer Vishal Shrivastava mentioned that the Mudh Airfield and several other key projects are nearing completion within the next two months.
Project Himank maintains Leh- Manali National Highway axis to ensure smooth road communication. For better access to the defence forces, it earlier constructed Durbuk Shyok – DBO road. Since its establishment, it has earned the nickname “Mountain Tamers” for its notable role in constructing roads in most challening circumstances. For Parikrama, Yangchan Dolma from Leh Ladakh.”

Acemoglu and Johnson are at MIT, while Robinson works at the University of Chicago. This year’s laureates have provided new insights into why there are such vast differences in prosperity between nations. One important explanation is persistent differences in societal institutions. By examining the various political and economic systems introduced by European colonisers, Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson have been able to demonstrate a relationship between institutions and prosperity. They have also developed theoretical tools that can explain why differences in institutions persist and how institutions can change.
