Now time for our segment DATELINE INDIA in which we take a look at the developments taking place at national or global level. Today we will talk about the International Day of Sign Languages.

(International Day of Sign Languages)

International Day of Sign Languages 2024

  • The International Day of Sign Languages is observed each year on September 23. This day provides a special occasion to advocate for the preservation and promotion of the linguistic identity and cultural richness of all deaf individuals and those who use sign languages. During the 2024 celebration of Sign Language Day, the focus will be on emphasizing the unity that sign languages bring.

  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared September 23 as the International Day of Sign Languages in 2018, as part of its efforts to promote inclusivity and recognise the diversity of languages. This date coincides with the establishment of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) in 1951.

  • The theme for this year’s International Day of Sign Languages 2024 is “Sign up for Sign Language Rights,” emphasising the need for country leaders to recognise and promote sign language rights in their respective nations. In fact, the World Federation of the Deaf is encouraging government officials to sign this year’s theme in their national sign language to show their support.

  • Sign languages are fully fledged visual languages, structurally distinct from the spoken languages that pass your message through the use of gestures or symbols. Sign language is not universal; instead, each country has developed its own unique sign language system.

Did you know that there are over 300 different sign languages used worldwide (UN, 2024), each with its own grammar, vocabulary and structure?  So, to conclude our discussion today on International Day Of Sign Language let me share with our listeners what George Veditz very famously said“Sign language is the noblest gift God has given to deaf people.” So,Happy International Day of Sign Languages.

India’s public distribution system is one of the largest food supply systems in the world. In order to modernise the public distribution system and ensure food security to the poor, Gujarat government has set up State’s first Annapurti grain ATM’ in Bhavnagar to supply ration to the poors. Let’s know more about this  unique initiative from our Ahmedabad correspondent;

“The launch of the first Annapurna Grain ATM in Gujarat is a landmark initiative by Government of Gujarat. It is a place where poor people can withdraw wheat and rice through their ration card. Inaugurating this initiative, the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Nimuben Bambhania, said Even if people going to the ATM do not know how to write their names, with their biometric thumbs, they get what they want.  Annapurti Anaj ATM’ can hold 1000 kg of wheat and rice. This automatic machine can give 25 to 35 kg of grain in 40 seconds and can be used round the clock. Thus, people will no longer need to stand in long queues. The state-of-the-art system ensures food security to the economically weaker households of the state.  Besides, it will also be helpful in eliminating problems like shortage of stock and curb malpractices in ration shops. Filmmaker Kiran Rao’s comedy drama “Laapataa Ladies” has been chosen and submitted as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025 in the Best Foreign Film Category. More from our Correspondent Payal Sharma;

“The Film Federation of India has confirmed this, adding that the 13-member select committee headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua unanimously decided on the film, produced by Aamir Khan and Rao. The Juri’s Citation on ‘Laapataa Ladies’ stated, that Well-defined, powerful characters in one world a LAAPATAA LADIES perfectly captures the diversity of Indian women, which is a strange mixture of submission and dominance. The film is a slice-of-life comedy about the misadventures of two young brides who become separated on the same train but with different grooms. It shows you that women can happily desire to be home makers as well as rebel and be entrepreneurially inclined. A story that can simultaneously be seen as one that needs change, and one that can bring about change. Lapataa Ladies is a film that can engage, entertain and make sense not just to women in India but universally as well. Popular films like Animal, Malayalam National Award-winning Aattam and Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light were among the contenders. Payal Sharma FOR PARIKRAMA.”
