On this Independence Day from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Next Generation of GST reforms, by Diwali. The Prime Minister’s vision of creating a more efficient and citizen friendly economy was realised as the GST Council on 3rd September approved rates rationalisation with a focus on the common man. The Council has simplified the indirect tax system into a two-tier structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent from a four-tier structure of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. These reforms have reduced tax rates in many sectors easing the life of citizens. Today we look at the reforms undertaken for the textile industry.
Our correspondent reports that the GST reforms have been carried out with a focus on the common man and will come into effect from the 22nd of this month.
The GST rationalisation in textiles removes structural anomalies, reduces costs, boosts demand, supports exports, and will sustain jobs. GST on Man-made fibres has been reduced from 18 percent to 5 percent while Man-made yarns have been brought down from 12 percent to 5 percent. The reduction will correct the Inverted Duty Structure issue in Man-made fibres. This is expected to align fibre, yarn, and fabric rates, removing longstanding anomalies that increased working capital burden for manufacturers. Union Textiles Minister, Giriraj Singh highlighted that most of the Chapters under textiles now come under the 5 percent Slab and will boost exports and domestic consumption.
The Industry has also welcomed the reforms. Textile Trader, Sushil Garodia told the media that by simplifying the tax structure, burdens on businesses will decrease and overall help the consumers.
The new tax reforms will provide a strong push to India’s fibre-neutral policy, ensuring balanced growth across both cotton and man-made segments. Adarsh for Akashvani News, Delhi.
