A total of 60.09 per cent of voter turnout was recorded in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha Elections yesterday. In this phase, 49 Parliamentary Constituencies spread over six States and two Union Territories went to polls. Polling remained largely peaceful with voters from all walks of life participated enthusiastically despite the heat wave condition in several parts of the country.
According to Election Commission, Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest percentage of voter turnout with 56.73 per cent. While, Bihar saw a voter turnout of 54.85 percent, Jharkhand saw a poll percentage of 63.07 percent, Ladakh recorded 69.62 percent of voter turnout, Maharashtra recorded around 54.29 per cent, Odisha saw 67.59 per cent of voter turnout, Uttar Pradesh recorded around 57.79 percent and West Bengal saw a turnout of around 74.65 percent.
A total of 695 candidates were in the electoral fray in this phase of elections. The voting took place peacefully on 14 seats of Uttar Pradesh, 13 of Maharashtra, seven of West Bengal, five each of Odisha and Bihar, three seats of Jharkhand along with one each in Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
With the conclusion of this phase, polling for General Elections is now completed in 25 States and UTs and 428 Parliamentary Constituencies. Polling is also complete for State Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh and 63 assembly seats of Odisha State Assembly.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for severe heatwave conditions over the plains of Northwest India, north Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat State for the next three days. The IMD said, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan and northwest Madhya Pradesh till 24th of this month.
The weather department also forecasts a gradual rise of about 2-3 degrees Celsius over many parts of Northwest and Central India for the next four days.
Yesterday, maximum temperatures were in the range of 43-47 degrees Celsius over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Vidarbha region and plains of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand recorded maximum temperatures of around 40-42 degrees Celsius.
Pre-monsoon showers have intensified in the southern parts of India with the advancement of the southwest monsoon into some parts of the Maldives and the Comorin area, the South Bay of Bengal, the Nicobar Islands, and the South Andaman Sea. An orange alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka till Friday. These regions are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Kerala will experience extremely heavy rainfall till tomorrow. The IMD also forecast the formation of a low-pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal around Wednesday.

The Government Stanley Medical College has said that 7 out of 10 persons screened were overweight or obese. In a health screening camp held on Monday, 13 percent were reportedly having hypertension and 16 percent diabetes. Eleven thousand 780 persons have been screened since 2022 under the ‘Master health check up scheme’ , paying Rs.1,000 for investigations including blood tests and scans. Analysis showed 2948 persons with hypertension and 3245 with diabetes. In total, doctors had screened 11 thousand 780 people including 6,198 women, since 2022 under the master health check up scheme.
Health Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi said that the camps are conducted to educate people about prevention and management of hypertension and its effects on the heart, kidneys, brain and eyes. He said that one must reduce their salt intake and increase intake of vegetables to prevent hypertension and keep the disorder under control.

Yesterday morning, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) raided an alleged rave party at G.R. Farmhouse near Electronic City in Bengaluru. The raid, conducted at 3 AM , was prompted by suspicions of drug abuse, according to the police reports.
The event, organized by a Hyderabad-based event planner, extended well beyond permitted hours, drawing the attention of anti-narcotics officials. During the inspection, the CCB team discovered a stash of drugs, including 17 MDMA tablets and cocaine. Over 100 attendees were present, including 25 young women from Andhra Pradesh and Bengaluru, some of whom had reportedly been flown in specifically for the occasion.
Adding to the intrigue, the identification card of an Andhra Pradesh MLA was found in a luxury car parked near the venue, along with several other high-end vehicles. The party, planned to run from evening until Monday morning, was clandestinely organized, on the outskirts of the city. Following the raid, five individuals, including the party organizer and three drug peddlers, were arrested.

The Telangana State cabinet has decided in favour of conducting further studies and tests on the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages, the key components of the Kaleswaram Lift Irrigation Project in the state. Briefing the media after the cabinet meeting yesterday, State Revenue Minister P. Srinivas Reddy said three organisations of the Centre were identified for the task. The physical and technical aspects of each barrage will be studied by two of the organisations identified. He said the kind of repairs to be taken up will be decided taking their recommendations and findings into consideration. He further said the project authorities were asked to explore the possibility of lifting water from the barrages to meet irrigation needs of farmers in the command area of the project by putting up simple rock-filled gabion structures in place of the damaged structures with nominal expenditure by taking into consideration the recommendations of the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA).

लोकसभा चुनाव के लिए दिल्ली में वृद्धजनों और दिव्यांगजनों के लिए घर से मतदान के चौथे दिन कुल मिलाकर चार हजार सात सौ 74 लोगों ने वोट डाला। चुनाव आयोग के अनुसार सबसे अधिक पश्चिमी दिल्ली में कुल एक हजार एक सौ 48 लोगों ने मतदान किया। वहीं सबसे कम उत्तर पूर्वी दिल्ली में कुल तीन सौ 97 लोगों ने मतदान किया। आयोग के अनुसार कुल पांच हजार चार सौ छह मतदाताओं ने घर से वोट करने के लिए आवेदन किया है। निर्वाचन आयोग ने 85 वर्ष से अधिक आयु के वृद्धजनों और दिव्यांगों के लिए पिछले सप्ताह नई दिल्ली में मतदान के लिए इस विशेष सुविधा की शुरूआत की थी। राष्ट्रीय राजधानी में एक लाख 75 हजार से अधिक वरिष्ठ नागरिक और दिव्यांग लोकसभा चुनाव के लिए मतदान करने के पात्र हैं। इनमें 97 हजार के करीब 85 साल से अधिक के वरिष्ठ नागरिक और 76 हजार से अधिक दिव्यांग शामिल हैं।

The United Nations General Assembly first declared this World Day in 2002, following UNESCO’s adoption of the 2001 Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, recognizing the need to “enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence.”

जानकी देवी बजाज (अंग्रेज़ी: Janaki Devi Bajaj, जन्म- 7 जनवरी, 1893; मृत्यु- 21 मई, 1979) गाँधीवादी जीवन शैली की कट्टर समर्थक थीं। उन्होंने कुटीर उद्योग के माध्यम से ग्रामीण विकास में काफी सहयोग किया। वह एक स्वावलंबी महिला थीं, जिन्होंने स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में सक्रिय रूप से भाग लिया था। उनके व्यक्तित्व में एक विरोधाभास-सा था। जानकी देवी बजाज जहाँ दानी, मित्तव्ययी और कठोर थीं, वहीं दूसरी ओर दयालु भी बहुत थीं। जानकी देवी बजाज के आजीवन किये गए कार्यों को सम्मानित करने के लिए भारत सरकार ने सन् 1956 में उन्हें पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित किया था। भारत में पहली बार 17 जुलाई, 1928 के ऐतिहासिक दिन को जानकी देवी अपने पति और हरिजनों के साथ वर्धा के लक्ष्मीनारायण मंदिर पहुँचीं और मंदिर के दरवाजे हर किसी के लिए खोल दिए।

Today is the birthday of Mohanlal Viswanathan, a renowned Indian actor, playback singer, film director, producer and distributor, and director who predominantly works in Malayalam film industry, besides also having appeared in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada films. The Government of India has honoured him with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his contributions to Indian cinema. Mohanlal has also won five National Film Awards.
Mohanlal’s first role was as a sixth grader for a stage play called Computer Boy, in which he played a ninety-year-old man. Mohanlal, along with actor and scriptwriter Sreenivasan, who played his sidekick in several films, showcased the angst of unemployed, educated Malayali youth forced to adapt to hostile environments in many realistic social satires.

सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा (अंग्रेज़ी: Sunderlal Bahuguna, जन्म- 9 जनवरी, 1927; मृत्यु- 21 मई, 2021) प्रसिद्ध पर्यावरणविद और ‘चिपको आन्दोलन’ के प्रमुख नेता थे। इन्हें सन 1984 के ‘राष्ट्रीय एकता पुरस्कार’ से सम्मानित किया गया था। सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा के अनुसार, “पेड़ों को काटने की अपेक्षा उन्हें लगाना अति महत्वपूर्ण है”। सन 1949 में मीराबेन व ठक्कर बाप्पा के सम्पर्क में आने के बाद सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा दलित वर्ग के विद्यार्थियों के उत्थान के लिए प्रयासरत हो गए तथा उनके लिए टिहरी में ‘ठक्कर बाप्पा होस्टल’ की स्थापना भी की। दलितों को मन्दिर प्रवेश का अधिकार दिलाने के लिए भी उन्होंने आन्दोलन छेड़ दिया था। सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा को कई प्रतिष्ठित पुरुस्कारों से भी सम्मानित किया गया जिनमें शामिल हैं -पद्मश्री, पद्म विभूषण, राष्ट्रीय एकता पुरस्कार, राइट लाइव लीहुड पुरस्कार (चिपको आंदोलन), जमनालाल बजाज पुरस्कार और सामाजिक विज्ञान के डॉक्टर की मानद उपाधि आईआईटी रुड़की द्वारा!

Aditya Chopra became an avid film buff from his early childhood. And while his schooling in film started with viewing films, his college and university were his father Yash Chopra’s home productions. At the age of 18, his own film career kicked off. He started working as an assistant to his father in CHANDNI, LAMHE and DARR.
At the mere age of 23, he made his directorial debut with DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE (DDLJ) which is still running theatrically, though it was originally released on 20 October 1995. दिल तो पागल है, मेरे यार की शादी है, मुझसे शादी करोगी, साथिया, हम तुम, धूम, वीर ज़ारा, बंटी और बबली, सलाम नमस्ते, फन्ना, रब ने बना दी जोड़ी आदि!
