As we celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor, the Nation salutes the valour of the Indian soldiers. As a tribute to the Armed Forces, Akashvani News is presenting a special series. Today we remember Param Vir Chakra awardee Major Hoshiar Singh.
Born in Rohtak District of Haryana, Major Hoshiar Singh, was commissioned in the 3rd Grenadiers Regiment in June 1963. During Indo-Pak war in 1971, the battalion was assigned the task of establishing a bridgehead across the Basantar River which was covered with deep minefields on both sides and protected by well fortified defences by the enemy. Major Singh was the commanding officer of the C Company which was instructed to capture the locality of Jarpal, held under Pakistani control. The company came under intense shelling and crossfire from medium machine guns. Undeterred, Major Hoshiar Singh led his troops and engaged in a fierce hand-to-hand fight. Despite the heavy bombardment and tank fire, he went from trench to trench motivating his troops. Inspired by his courage and leadership, his company countered all the attacks and brought on heavy casualties on the enemy. On 17th December 1971, the enemy made yet another attack with a battalion backed by heavy artillery fire. Major Hoshiar Singh was seriously wounded by the enemy fire, but unflinching, he went from trench to trench motivating his men. As he was encouraging his men, an enemy shell landed near the medium machine gun post injuring the crew. Major Hoshiar Singh, realizing the importance of machine-gun fire, immediately rushed to the machine-gun pit and though seriously wounded himself, manned the gun inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. The attack was successfully combated and the enemy retreated leaving behind 85 dead including their Commanding Officer. Major Hoshiar Singh was awarded Param Vir Chakra for his absolute bravery and steadfast devotion in the line of duty. The Nation salutes him. ANUPAM MISHRA, AKASHVANI NEWS, DELHI.

The Beating Retreat ceremony at the Attari-Wagah Joint Checkpost will open for general public from today evening. The ceremony resumed yesterday but it was for the media only. Beating Retreat ceremony at two other border posts – Hussainiwala in Ferozepur and Sadqi (सदकी) in Fazilka will also open for public from today. The ceremonial parade was stopped on May 8th in view of the India’s ‘Operation Sindoor.’ However, after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, changes have been made in this drill as per necessary security measures.
Previously, the gates at the border were opened, and the parade was conducted as a joint drill. Now, the gates will remain closed during the parade and there will be no handshakes during drill. Also, there will be no exchange of sweets or gifts on any occasion.

मध्य प्रदेश मंत्रिमंडल ने महानगर क्षेत्र योजना और विकास अधिनियम को मंजूरी दी है। इससे दो मुख्य शहर- भोपाल और इंदौर को महानगर में विकसित करने का मार्ग प्रशस्त हो गया है। प्रस्तावित भोपाल महानगरीय क्षेत्र में पांच जिले – भोपाल, रायसेन, विदिषा, सीहोर और राजगढ शामिल होंगे। इंदौर महानगरीय क्षेत्र में इंदौर, उज्जैन, देवास और धार जिले सम्मिलित होंगे। सरकार महानगरीय योजना समिति और महानगरीय क्षेत्र विकास प्राधिकरण की स्थापना करेगी। मुख्यमंत्री मोहन यादव ने कहा कि ये प्राधिकरण प्रत्येक महानगरीय क्षेत्र की भौगोलिक और आर्थिक आवश्यकताओं के लिए एकीकृत विकास योजना की तैयारी और कार्यान्वयन करेंगे। इस कदम का उद्देश्य दस लाख से अधिक आबादी वाले राज्य में शहरी क्षेत्रों का एकीकृत विकास सुनिश्चित करना है।

In Uttarakhand, the ongoing Char Dham Yatra is witnessing an overwhelming influx of pilgrims. Since the sacred pilgrimage began on April 30, over 10 Lakh devotees have visited the holy shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
According to official data, around 4 lakh pilgrims have visited Kedarnath, 2 lakh 50 thousand pilgrims have reached Badrinath, and more than three lakh sixty five thousands have paid obeisance at Gangotri and Yamunotri combined. To ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage, the state government and administration have made extensive preparations this year. Health camps, mobile medical units, and 108 ambulance services have been deployed across all four shrines. Adequate arrangements for drinking water, sanitation, cleanliness, and rest areas have also been made for the pilgrims. Additionally, a special monitoring system has been activated to enhance safety during the yatra. Traffic management, weather alerts, and emergency response teams have been strategically positioned along the pilgrimage routes and at the shrines to provide prompt assistance in case of any emergencies. Notably, over 46 lakhs devotees undertook the Char Dham Yatra last year. The Panchayat Union primary school in Thiruputkuzhi near Kanchipuram has come up with an innovative way to enrol children in Class 1. It placed banners with QR codes on the school campus and bus stand to enable parents to enrol their wards from home during the summer vacation. The Headmaster of the School, C.Kumar said that the classes are broadcast live on YouTube once or twice a week to enable parents to see what their wards are studying at the school. Using the QR codes, 20 students enrolled for the 2025-26 academic year in Class 1. The school also used QR codes to update parents about homework, tests and rank details.

CBI has booked at least 39 point of sale agents for allegedly issuing unregistered ghost sim cards used by cyber fraudsters to deceive people online through tactics like impersonation, fake digital arrests and investment scams. The CBI said that the agents would register two SIM cards under a single buyer’s name falsely claiming an e KYC failure during the initial attempt. While the legitimate buyer would receive one SIM card, the second unregistered ghost SIM in their name would then be sold to cyber criminals. These illicit numbers are then used to open fraudulent bank accounts and make deceptive calls to unsuspecting victims.

The cash benefit will be offered in the name of the wife and a Government Order to this effect was issued. In the past, the incentive was awarded if only one person was differently abled. Now, it has been decided to award for marriage between two differently-abled persons too. In March 2018, the incentive was increased from 50 thousand to One lakh rupees by the previous government.

जानकी देवी बजाज (7 जनवरी, 1893- 21 मई, 1979) गाँधीवादी जीवन शैली की कट्टर समर्थक थीं। उन्होंने कुटीर उद्योग के माध्यम से ग्रामीण विकास में काफी सहयोग किया। वह एक स्वावलंबी महिला थीं, जिन्होंने स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में सक्रिय रूप से भाग लिया था। उनके व्यक्तित्व में एक विरोधाभास-सा था। जानकी देवी बजाज जहाँ दानी, मित्तव्ययी और कठोर थीं, वहीं दूसरी ओर दयालु भी बहुत थीं। जानकी देवी बजाज के आजीवन किये गए कार्यों को सम्मानित करने के लिए भारत सरकार ने सन् 1956 में उन्हें पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित किया था। भारत में पहली बार 17 जुलाई, 1928 के ऐतिहासिक दिन को जानकी देवी अपने पति और हरिजनों के साथ वर्धा के लक्ष्मीनारायण मंदिर पहुँचीं और मंदिर के दरवाजे हर किसी के लिए खोल दिए।

सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा (9 जनवरी, 1927- 21 मई, 2021) प्रसिद्ध पर्यावरणविद और ‘चिपको आन्दोलन’ के प्रमुख नेता को भी आज याद कर रहे हैं जिनकी पुण्य तिथि है। सन 1984 में उन्हें ‘राष्ट्रीय एकता पुरस्कार’ से सम्मानित किया गया। सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा के अनुसार, “पेड़ों को काटने की अपेक्षा उन्हें लगाना अति महत्वपूर्ण है”। सन 1949 में मीराबेन व ठक्कर बाप्पा के सम्पर्क में आने के बाद सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा दलित वर्ग के विद्यार्थियों के उत्थान के लिए प्रयासरत हो गए तथा उनके लिए टिहरी में ‘ठक्कर बाप्पा होस्टल’ की स्थापना भी की। दलितों को मन्दिर प्रवेश का अधिकार दिलाने के लिए भी उन्होंने आन्दोलन छेडा था। सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा को पद्मश्री, पद्म विभूषण सहित विभिन्न पुरस्कारों से सम्मानित किया गया।
