The Navaratri festival which started on September 22 in Tamil Nadu is a vibrant celebration honouring the divine feminine energy of Goddess Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati symbolising power, wealth and wisdom respectively.
Tamil Nadu’s celebrations are marked by the meticulous arrangement of Golu or Kolu—a tiered display of dolls depicting gods, goddesses, and daily life scenario depicting mythological themes, environment, and space. The dolls are often passed down through generations and are arranged on a makeshift staircase. The arrangements follow themes like the ten incarnations of Vishnu or Indian epics, and kolu arrangements will be witnessed by neighbours, friends, and family who exchange gifts and traditional snacks. There is a strong emphasis on performance arts, with traditional dances like Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam performed in temples and public spaces. In Madurai, the Meenakshi Amman Temple hosts a grand celebration with a Golu mandapam, where Goddess Meenakshi is decorated in nine different forms. In Mutharamman Temple, situated in Kulasekaranpattinam, at Thoothukudi district, the grand Dussehra festival started with flag hosting. This 10-day celebration honours Goddess Mutharamman, a form of the Divine Mother, and attracts thousands of devotees from across Tamil Nadu and beyond. On the first day of the five-day-long Durga Puja festivities, Kolkata has truly turned into the “City of Joy,” ready to soak in the colours of devotion, art, and cultural celebration.
“Organisers across the city have crafted diverse and thought- provoking themes for their pandals — ranging from social awareness and environmental concerns to reviving folk traditions and celebrating Bengal’s cultural heritage. An organiser has chosen a strikingly patriotic theme, “Amader Desh, Amader Durga” or Our Country, Our Durga, which pays homage to women’s participation in India’s freedom struggle, particularly during the Quit India Movement. The pandal will depict Devi Durga through the lens of brave women freedom fighters who fought with determination against colonial oppression, many of whom sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence. Assam is home to 34 of the 130 bamboo species found in the country and one of the largest bamboo producing states of India. To boost the bamboo based economy of the State and India’s green energy mission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first bamboo-based bio-refinery at Numaligarh in Golaghat district recently.
“Country’s first bamboo-based bio-refinery at Numaligarh in Golaghat district is a joint venture of Numaligarh Refinery Limited and Finnish companies Fortum and Chempolis. The refinery marks India’s first attempt to produce fuel-grade ethanol from bamboo biomass. This initiative is aligned with India’s target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol by this year. The facility will produce 49,000 tonnes of bio-ethanol annually, alongside 11,000 TPA of acetic acid and 19,000 TPA of furfural. It sources bamboo directly from nearly 3,000 farmers across Assam, creating a value chain estimated at Rs. 200 crore every year. It will not only boost the supply of ethanol for the transportation segment but also open more opportunities for the deployment of technologies related to the production of value-added products and chemicals from by-products of the bio-refinery.
