Bolivia: Death toll rises to 22 after military plane crashed in El Alto

In Bolivia, the death toll has risen to 22 after a military plane carrying 18 tons of new banknotes crashed on Friday in the western city of El Alto, a city adjacent to the capital La Paz. Another 29 people were injured, mostly passengers travelling on public transport where the plane crashed. Among the dead are 12 men, including one crew member, six women and four children.

The C-130 Hercules was arriving from Santa Cruz when it skidded off the runway and struck nearby vehicles. The plane was carrying banknotes for the Central Bank of Bolivia, with eight people on board. Forensic investigators were still recovering remains from the wreckage.

Authorities said police fired tear gas to disperse crowds trying to collect scattered cash. To prevent further looting, police and military personnel burned the cash boxes in the presence of Central Bank President David Espinoza, who said the bills have no legal value because they never entered circulation, without further clarification. Espinoza did not specify the amount of money being transported, but he said the banknotes had arrived in Santa Cruz from abroad. The Defence Ministry and aviation officials are investigating the cause of the crash.
