In the Bihar Assembly elections, the nomination papers of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Sweta Suman from the Mohania (Reserved) constituency in Kaimur district have been cancelled. The Returning Officer of Mohania rejected her nomination after finding her Scheduled Caste certificate to be invalid.
Yesterday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had filed a complaint in this regard with the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar. Meanwhile, the RJD candidate Sweta Suman and her lawyer have alleged that her nomination was cancelled under BJP’s pressure.
They argued that the Returning Officer does not have the authority to decide on the validity of a caste certificate and that the matter should have been referred to a screening committee.
The BJP candidate from this seat is Sangeeta Kumari, who had won the previous election as an RJD candidate but later joined the BJP. A total of 17 candidates had filed nomination papers from the Mohania constituency, out of which five were rejected.
After the scrutiny, 12 candidates remain in the fray from the seat. Tomorrow is last date of withdrawal of nominations.
