The 13th national parliamentary election will be held in Bangladesh on 12 February next year, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin announced today. A referendum on implementing the July National Charter will also take place the same day. In a televised address, the CEC outlined key deadlines in what is considered the most significant political milestone since the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus assumed power on 8 August 2024, following the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League’s ouster in the 5 August protests. More than 127.6 million citizens are eligible to vote, including over 300,000 registered expatriates who will participate via postal ballots. The simultaneous election and referendum signal a decisive moment for Bangladesh’s political and constitutional future.
