In Bangladesh, at least 14 people were killed and several others injured after lightning strikes hit seven districts during Kalbaishakhi (Nor’wester) thunderstorms. The storms arrived following more than a week of intense heatwave conditions across parts of the country. The highest number of casualties was reported in Gaibandha, where five people lost their lives.
Two deaths each were reported in Sirajganj, Jamalpur and Thakurgaon, while one person each was killed in Bogura, Natore and Panchagarh. Authorities said several others were injured in the incidents, while some cattle also died after being struck by lightning. Rain accompanied by thunderstorms was reported in Dhaka and parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, bringing temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said scattered rainfall may continue in different parts of the country over the coming days, which could help ease temperatures. Bangladesh experiences frequent lightning-related deaths during the pre-monsoon season, with experts repeatedly urging stronger public awareness, improved weather alerts, and safer shelter options for rural communities and outdoor workers.
