Bangladesh: BNP Names Tarique Rahman as New Party Chairperson

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman has been appointed as the party’s chairperson, filling the vacancy created after the demise of former Prime Minister and long-time party chief Khaleda Zia. The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee held last night at the party’s Dhaka office, in accordance with the party constitution.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that Mr Rahman, who has been serving as the party’s acting chairperson since 2018, has now formally assumed the role of BNP chairperson. The Standing Committee meeting was chaired by Tarique Rahman himself and attended by senior leaders of the party’s highest policymaking body.

Party sources said the emergency meeting also reviewed the country’s prevailing political situation and outlined the BNP’s future course of action.
